Attention Veterans - Cabela's Cuts Vets Discounts

I was active duty Army the last three years of Vietnam; I get “uneasy” when people want to thank me for my service - it always seems choreographed and disingenuous. In turn, I do not feel that anyone owes me anything (including appreciation) for my service - very frankly, I did not serve for them. I did it for selfish reasons - the GI bill funded college education. If Cabelas or any company does not want to discount my purchases, then I understand - they and everyone else owe me nothing. However, if the offer is there, I will use it - it is not an emotional thing for me one way or the other. I did my time and the Army kept it’s promise - the rest of the fluffy stuff for my service is artificial at best. I salute all active duty and veterans with quiet respect - they understand that camaraderie. Good shooting.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this; I really appreciate it.

I've always felt likewise.

I live near Fort Benning GA. I never served in the military. I try, at least once a month, to pick up the tab of a soldier if they are with their family in a restaurant when I enter. I don't do it for groups of soldiers...only families. If i did it for groups I would be broke in a couple of months.

And how would you feel if the some soldier complained to you because you didn't pick up the tab for him and his family, if you didn't provide them a free benefit that you were under no obligation to provide, but they complained anyway?

I wrote to the company’s customer service that I understand its their right not to offer discounts anymore but its my right not to purchase from them either.

I went to Cabela's yesterday to use a couple of gift cards.
I mentioned that I had read of the veterans discount on firearms was gone.
The salesman said they also discontinued that for employs.

I guess it will be like flipping burgers at McDonald's now.

I bought a shotgun at Cabela’s just last week. After I was told about the recent change to the veterans discount policy, the salesman thanked me and gave me the discount, which knocked $90 off the sale, and another $60 with my club points. Different strokes for different folks, but a smile and good attitude can go a long way.

Well, Like many of you I get a little embarrassed at the "Thank you for your service" comments. Many mean well but it bothers me. So much so that I rarely wear my Navy hats or shirts any more. BUT this is not why I posted this in the first place. If you like the veteran discounts then take advantage of them. If not then don't.

I got a response from a nice lady at Cabela's regarding my email about this issue. She said she understood my "concern" but could not address it at her level and told me that she forwarded my email to "the leadership team". That was March 11th. I haven't heard anything since. When / if they respond I will post what they say.

At Costco a week ago my wife was waiting for a sample. A couple in their 80s(?) were looking at the hat I wore. They talked a minute quietly and the man came up and asked what the badge i was wearing meant. I told him Berlin Brigade and I had credit for Spandau Guard. He went back and talked to his wife. She came up laid a hand on my arm and said something in German. I asked what was said and he provided a translation. We are from Leipzieg and have immigrated. If you had not held Berlin, we would still be East Germans.
Worth all the things I have had to put up with, I will continue to wear that hat.

I served during the entire time of the Viet Nam war, never had to go didn't volunteer either. I was never spat upon but did receive indifferent and rude treatment from some people. I think those people grew up and realized how poorly they treated veterans and maybe have gone a bit too far, but I believe most do appreciate our service.
I didn't know Cabela's had a discount program either until I bought an item and the cashier asked if I was a veteran. I didn't expect it but appreciated it. I don't feel that I'm entitled to it and won't lose any sleep over losing it. I've never spent big bucks at either BPS or Cabela's because their prices are way too high for a big box store that buys in such volume. It doesn't make much sense when a small LGS can offer the same products at the same or lower price.
