Here is a note from one of our brothers "down under" (I just got this, and I did not see it anywhere else on THR - if I missedit, my apologies!):

Greetings law abiding citizens.

I thought you all would like to see the truth about the effect of gun laws. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent; Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. (Note the obvious, that while the law-abiding citizens turned their guns in, the criminals did not ! Surprise, surprise.)

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly.

This result bears out the information available from US records, information ignored by Australian politicians and the popular media. You won't see this on the evening news or hear your governor or members of parliament being outraged by the escalation in crime in line with disarmament of law abiding citizens.

The Australian experience proves it again. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control give the criminal element open slather.

The above is not the case because law abiding citizens regularly used their guns but because of the possibility that they may. Facts beyond the comprehension of many until their aged parent is assaulted.

All who campaign to disarm the law abiding citizen are traitors along with those who actual legislate it. How much proof do you need before the penny drops??

Take note Americans, before it's to late!

Yawn. It's two years old.

Actually, it's about four years old, and it is not certain that the person said to have written it, 'Ed Chenel', even exists but some of the points raised are valid.

Snopes said:
it should be noted that the Australia-wide percentage of homicides committed with firearms is now lower than it was before the gun buy-back program, and lower than it has been at any point during the past ten years. (In the former case, the absolute number of firearm homicides in Australia in 1998-99 was the lowest in the past ten years.)

Firearms homicides have indeed gone down from around 45% of total homicides just before WW2 to about 19% in 2001, continuing the decline which began in 1969, but the overall murder rate has, according to the latest figures, stayed the same at about 2 per 100 000 of population.

So the Australian government has spent about $600,000,000 of taxpayers money confiscating guns from their lawful owners to achieve a lowering of the murder rate of absolutely zero!

Only a politician or an anti-gun fanatic could claim this as a success.
