Aussie visiting the South in April - what to see

Are you planning to make it as far as Atlanta? There are a good many things to do here if you do. Including a nice indoor range that rents a number of interesting things, including full-auto guns. (They rotate them, but I think they presently have a Kriss Vector, an AR/M-4 type thing, and an AK.)

If you pass through NW Arkansas and are an art lover, there's Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, in Bentonville, AR, funded by the Walton fortune (Wal-Mart heiress). This place is a world-class museum and seeing the building alone is worth the visit (their coffee bar serves the best latte my wife's had outside of Seattle, according to her). Admission is easy to digest at free since the Walmart Foundation endowed the Museum with a few million to cover admission for anyone wanting to view the art.

I learned at an early age that art wasn't my thing, but it was still an interesting visit for me due to the fact the historical information you get to read near the art work.

I don't know much, but if you watch Gun Gripes, or anything else by Iraqveteran8888 (gun gripes, we'll shoot your stuff, etc...), then you can see them in person. Moss Pawn is in Georgia. Enjoy your time here!

You mentioned western Georgia and the possibility of visiting ranges.

Atlanta Range and Ordnance in Newnan, GA. Brand new; only open for a couple of months; nice indoor range; plenty of pistol lanes plus some 40 yd rifle lanes.

Autrey's Armory in Fayetteville, GA. Nice range that's been around a long time.

Either of these are great to visit.... during the week. A little too crowded for me on Saturdays.

trip

Antoher vote for Collectors Firearms in Houston. Its like walking into a museum. Thousands of guns of all types.
Ranger museum in Waco is worth a stop. Some fancy Colts there.
Antique arms mentioned in New Orleans is on Royal St. along with all the antique shops.
Any Bass Pro or Cabellas is worth the time and they are every where.

Looks like you're taking a trip in the opposite direction from one of my favorite spots.

Midland, Texas is home to the Commemorative Air Force (formerly the Confederate Air Force) and they have quite a lot to see. Under their "Aircraft and Vehicle Display" entry on their website:

"A visit to the museum includes a wide variety of aircraft on display in the fully functional CAF Main Hangar. The CAF actively restores, maintains and flies vintage aircraft that was flown by all military services of the United States. The display is continuously changing as aircraft rotate in and out for air shows and maintenance schedules."

As I said, they're the opposite direction of the road trip you plan on taking. However, they're right off of I-20, which makes it a straight shot out of Dallas if you want to make the trip. About 280 miles, though, so it's not a short trip.

It's a shame to bypass Oklahoma,,,

If you are a gun nut,,,
There is one place in Bartlesville that's a must-see.

The J. M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum

They bill the museum as:
Yes; we are the largest private gun collection in the world...

I spent the better part of 6 hours there one fine summer day,,,
I didn't get to see every gun they had on display.

It truly has every gun I have ever heard of,,,
And many more I didn't know existed.

Do yourself a favor and do NOT travel on the Interstate system. If you truly want to see and experience the local flavor, culture, and sights, you will get none of those from the Interstate system. Wife and I just did 10 days driving the entire Blue Ridge Parkway and Sky Line Drive for the Fall foliage and we took every two lane back-country county road we could by using her I-pad with Google GPS/Map/Earth overlays. Combined with Yelp reviews, we were able to find rooms, fantastic local eateries and neat tourist things slightly off the beaten track.

If you like clay target shooting, there should be some nice courses on your travels
