Backup gun for Glock 19

I've got a Glock 19 and I want to get a backup gun for it. When I mean backup, I probably won't be wearing two guns on me like Massad Ayoob advises. That might be nice in case of a TEOTWAWKI / riot / Katrina scenario.

What I'm most concerned about is if the Glock 19 has to go to the gunsmith to get repaired. Its primary use is home defense / self defense.

So: should I get another Glock 19 as a backup? Or should I get a Glock 26 as a backup?

The 19 is good because it is an exact backup, but sort of boring.

I'm leaning towards the 26, because it is close enough to a 19 to function the same. It can use the 19 magazines. I could wear it with the 19 if needed. Also most of the internals are the same. Plus it'd be interesting to see how the subcompacts are like in the Glock line.

What do you guys think?

The 26 is a good choice because it can be used as a BUG. But so can the 19. And you have exact spare parts. Tough choice. Get the 26 for variety and more options.

Voted for another G19 ONLY because you said you weren't likely to carry a BUG. If the purpose of the gun in question is to be a spare, it might as well be a fully functional copy of the original.

If you are a collector, get something interesting.

If you are primarily concerned about self defense, get another 19 or a 26. I have both. I started out with the 19. I ran into a great deal on the 26 and bought it. The 26 is now my daily carry gun, and the 19 has become the backup.

They have the same trigger, same manual of arms, etc. If you use 12 round magazines in the 26 you have to look to tell which one you have in your hand.

When it comes to defense, boring is a good thing.

If you want to feel all "Last Man Standing" I would say you should get a second G19.
Otherwise a G26 would be a good choice.
Keep one of the 10 or 12 rounders in the gun and carry an extra G19 magazine.

I voted G26. But get what you want to get. If it were me, I'd go with the 26 because it affords me more versatility without costing me any round capacity.

I voted Glock 26. they take the 19 mags, same ammo.

I generally carry a S&W 442/642 as my back-up...or a couple of extra mags.

Sell it and get a CZ P-01. You won't NEED a backup. ALWAYS works. ALWAYS ACCURATE.

I suggest carrying a pocket gun (PM9 or snubbie) as secondary.

I would go for the 26 - same round and magazines plus you'll have a super concealable pistol if needed.

Or you could go the opposite spectrum and get a G34 so you have a proper full-frame pistol on the same caliber.

if the 19 is the gun that you train with then yes i say get another 19, you can't go worng with that. the 26 would be good for ccw, but i wouldn't use it as my first choice for a hd gun.

You need a Glock 23 = .40 S&W or a Glock 30 = .45 ACP to complement the G19.

Thanks everyone for your replies and votes. I'm going to go get a Glock 26 and make things slightly more interesting but still keep as much in common as possible with the G19. I'll probably try different holsters for it so I can wear both at the same time if I need to - I hear a G26 in an ankle holster as backup is nice.

S&W 642 I hear can be a lot of recoil esp w/+P ammo but seems like a great idea otherwise.

mljdeckard: I am looking for a good AR-15 rifle, preferably in a 16" M4 carbine configuration. However they are very hard to find nowadays, at least without paying $1500 - $2000 for one. If anyone can help me find an AR-15 in M4 config or even just an upper receiver, I would appreciate it! (Please PM or email.)

I think with an AR-15, plus the two Glocks, I should be pretty much set for normal home defense, riot/hurricane/zombie home defense, and CCW with and without a BUG.

Wouldn't that mean he would just have to carry around two different kinds of ammo and two different kinds of mags? I highly doubt that the "bigger = better" mentality is going to work in this case.
