Hello everyone it was a bad day today, I just came come from vacation to find a leak in my ceiling and a puddle in my range bag. I thought I had placed all my guns in the safe for vacation however my favorite range gun was still there and covered in RUST! I was the 3rd time in my life I cried. I had a well used FEG JPK-9HP that was one of the first guns I bought, it’s a great shooter and I’m sentimental with it. The barrel and internals are ok but the well worn outside has some rust. The gun had character with the worn finish but the rust patches make it look awful. I quickly disassembled the gun and doused it in CLP.
Can you guys recommend anyone for rust removal and refinishing? Yes I know it will cost as much as the gun is worth but I love it to death.

Wherever or however you get it refinished, you need to stop the rust now before it forms pitting. Surface rust is easily removed with abrasive blasting but pitting will/may still show up depending on how deep the pits are. Field strip it, clean the bore and oil it. You can use a lite oil like CLP for penetration into the tight areas and moisture displacement but then use a heavier oil to seal the surface....something that will cling. I've even seen car motor oil used to put the metal into "suspended animation". Keep yer powder dry, Mac.

If its just a coat of light surface rust I'd get some #0000 Steel Wool and some 3-n-1 oil (or any similar) and dip the steel wool in it and lightly rub the rust off. Once completed, with the entire gun down with a soft cloth old T-shirt, and then re-oil the surface(s). If you can preserve the normal worn finish back it preserves the "character" of the gun too. :D

Wishing you good luck.

TB

Ditto on the 4-0 steel wool & oil. I have turned some real porcine POSs into silk purses with judicious use of it. You cannot bear down hard else you will remove more than the rust, but gentle and persistent use may save your day. At the very least it will let you know if refinishing may be required. I had the same thing happen to me, but from a leaking exterior wall that allowed water to seep into my closet carpet. My range bag was on the floor with several pistol magazines that developed deep pits along with the nuisance rust. Still have them, work fine, just look like small pox victims... :cuss:

Except for the looks don't worry .I've known of a few guns found in rivers and once cleaned up worked fine even though they looked terrible !!

a really good way to destroy rust i found is take some oil and steel wool and gently rub it away. one of my dad's old .410's was covered in rust when i found it, and the finish was well long gone, so idk how it will affect ur finishes. you should definately look into putting a rustproof finish on ur guns.
