What's its value to someone who is not into bench rest shooting?

Very little. It is a rest. It will be used for rested shooting, where dragging around fifteens pounds is not a handicap. I imagine there maybe some non bench competitions that this may be useful in. Varmint eradication done in a manner that doesn't require much moving could be another avenue.

I like them, but have a very expensive bipod and mat. But my knees are not getting any younger either.

I buy enough rifles and new optics to juuuust be able to justify the cost. Sighting in scopes, load development, and the occasional need to satisfy my desire to shoot touching groups at distance are all greatly aided by a rest. Getting kids to shoot small groups they can get excited about is a big plus as well.
