Dixon: City Could Join Gun Dealer Lawsuit

POSTED: 10:34 am EDT September 19, 2007
NEW YORK -- Baltimore could follow New York City's lead and sue gun dealers for their alleged role in the flow of illegal guns into the city.

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon was in New York on Tuesday and met with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spearheaded the legal fight against 27 gun dealers on the East Coast.

Bloomberg alleges that hundreds of weapons used in crimes in New York had been purchased illegally from the dealers.

Dixon's meeting with Bloomberg came after Baltimore's deadliest weekend of the year, in which six people were killed.

Dixon said that illegal guns are being used in Baltimore's shootings, and she said she'll ask the city solicitor about possibly joining the lawsuit.

No other cities have joined New York's case.

:banghead::banghead::banghead:

First the "Gun Offender Database", then the new forms we have to fill out for handgun/"assault rifle" purchases, now THIS.

Any ideas what to do about it? I realize that we're probably not going to change her mind, but Dixon is the head of a city that is currently awash in murders. She's been taking fire for that, and maybe there's a way to point out her desperate struggle for credibility, among the compete lack of action her plans have turned out as.

Ummmm, let's see-

lots of murders
lots of drugs
lots of unwed, teenage mothers
crappy schools
low voter turn out
political pandering
Don't snitch!
It's the police's fault all these young men are getting arrested and are in jail!

Surprised at what you get? That city is a cesspool and getting worse. Move out while you still can.

I am still really confused about this, I thought Congress passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce Act in 2005 that protected legal businesses from these type of lawsuits.

Mayor Blomberg is using gun control as a platform to appear to be doing something for New York city.

Truth be told, he runs it in a way any Facist would be proud of. Just look at the fines imposed on vendors for trivial matters, and now he is working on imposing additional tolls for people that want to come to the city to visit to detract from traffic... Translation: Less tourists visiting the city to spend$$

They did. But NYC jurisdiction shopped and found an anti gun judge who allowed the suit to go forward.

All the law does is give the person sued grounds to have it dismissed. It doesn't mean that the clerk won't file the suit.

I always get a kick out of all the members here and in Strategies and Tactics who wave the castle doctrine laws in front of them like they are holding a crucifix up before a vampire. But the reality is, if someone can find a judge to let the suit continue, then the law giving you immunity from the suit is worthless

Not only no, but HELL NO. I'm not going to give up and move away due to bad laws. Why do so many people keep suggesting this to residents of states where gun laws are the most extreme? Do people really think, that if we all move away, the laws won't follow us?

The only way to make things better, for ALL of us, is to stand and fight where the situation is the bleakest. Unfortunately, My home state of MD is one of those areas. I will not flee laws that I can stay and help fight.

If you recall, Bloomberg was shot down by the ATF for his agents doing Straw Purchases. I'd kind of like to see him and his cronies prosecuted for that, but don't expect it to happen.
Also, didn't Virginia invite him out of the state for doing that same thing?

And, of course, the element of surprise is no longer there. If Dixon does this, I hope PA gun dealers are savvy enough to call the PSP. PA is on a rampage against straw purchasers now and would probably prosecute any they catch.

Jeff, Then it sounds like the legislation didn't have enough teeth in it if it is this useless. Thanks for the information.
