Bamboo shooting sticks

I recall someone on this subject mentioning using bamboo shoots for shooting sticks. Well I found some where I run my Lab and decided to try it. After cutting the shoots down to size and shredding the shoots down to where I could actually see the bamboo, then putting a small bungee cord around the sticks. I noted they were very light, however fairly stable. I plan on the very near future in trying them out. I'll let ya all know how they worked out .

That is supposed to be the oldest BP weapon, I saw one at the JM Davis museum. Pretty cool stuff, love to see your results.

Umm...I think he meant to use them as a rest to shoot a rifle off of, not to load up with BP and fire.

Sorry brushhippie, VA27 was right, I do plan on using them for stabilizing my rifle, not shooting bp out of them, besides I could probably shoot around corners with 'em, but they are the straightest I could find out there.

Whoops Im with ya. Shootin something from a bamboo barrel does sound kinda scary, but they did do it.....sounds intriguing....maybe I will try it.

I use mine on a regular basis they work great and weigh very little. A height adjustable tripod is about as good as it gets for stability.
They also make a dandy walking stick.

But Captain Kirk made a bamboo hand cannon in the STTOS episode "Arena" so it MUST be doable!!!! Ban bamboo cannons today and save a Gorn Commander!!!! Oh, the inhumanity!!!

If you are using a tripod made of poles as a rest, you can improve things by dropping a sock full of sand or dry beans on the topto rest the rifle on to help kill the change in barrel harmonics from using a hard rest. Appearently some ACW sharpshooters did this.

Ummm yep, THAT one is. Somehow Im thinkin a bamboo cannon might not stand the test of time aaand since they date from around the 1500s.....
But I do think bamboo would make a great shooting stick and the price is right.

When I was a teen(back in the 60's)my brother and I got a brass 22 cal B/p cannon and we were inspired to build our own of various materials; large brass rods, aluminum rods, large steel screws, and large dowels. All worked fine and we test loaded them with a hefty load and a long, long fuse and great distance. The wood bores lasted only a few shots after testing, many didn't pass the test firing. In the Phillippines they use large bamboo sections and cut a touch hole in the back and add a half cup of gasoline, they use them for holidays and they have a fairly loud report and a large flash, at least they did in the 70's when I was stationed at Clark AFB Pi. I do remember a few blowing up, but they usually had plenty of spares, thanks to a ready supply of raw material. No one was ever injured at the events that I attended.
