Ban handguns now!

So What?

While only 25 percent of Americans own a handgun, 37 percent of Americans favor "a law that would ban the possession of handguns except for the police and other authorized persons."

So what? In 1700 the majority of "Americans" thought black people should be slaves.

So what? Before Columbus the majority of people thought that the world was flat.

So what? just because a majority believes some thing is so, does not make it right.

Every handgun is aimed at you

That's why I have my own to point back at them. ;)

Do these idiots honestly believe handguns will disappear if they are banned? It sure worked for marijuana, didn't it?

Only plumbers should have pipe wrenches.

The tyranny of Democracy! These people would steal with no remorse if only they could get enough gullible voters to agree with them. Fortunately they've only hoodwinked 37% so far. Unfortunately, some of those morally challenged folks sit in Congress.

I liked their "Resources" page. Not a single link to a stats website. Only links to studies conducted by people in Chicago.

This kind of thing tees me off

Since I have come to Texas, my handgun collection has only grown! I thought I was buying them for the purposes for hunting, plinking, and collecting, however, I guess that I was just buying them so that they were not pointed at me! I hate people like this- I don't want to live in a nanny-state- I understand people personally not wanting to have handguns, however, it is simply ridiculous to try and impose your worldview by force (of legislation) on others! Why can't the antis just leave us alone!

I'm just confused.

I can't figure out what the antis want to ban? First it's assault rifles, then handguns, then just "assault weapons" with detachable magazines, etc etc

Seems like they just don't know what it is they want to ban - or maybe it's just that they want to ban all of them.

If it's not those, it's "stun guns", "tasers" etc.

If they got their way, the only people with anything would be the police - and no offense to any officers here, but I don't trust the majority of police enough to give them that kind of power.

They state that only 25% of Americans own a handgun. That's misleading, because Americans under the age of 21 (possibly 18 in some states?) aren't legally old enough to own a handgun. Let's not forget felons.

I wonder what percentage of eligible Americans own a handgun?

(For the record, I don't agree with the government's standards of eligibility)

Every handgun is pointed at you? seems someone has some paranoia issues.:uhoh: Its rediculous when people buy into this stuff, pulling fake statistics out of their @$$, with bad research and misinformation. next you'll see: 96% of those polled agree everytime a gun is sold god kills a kitten.

The anti's actually don't want to ban guns of any sort, they just want them all in government hands. I constantly ask the anti gunner politicians why they don't make sure their police are the first to get rid of the "evil" guns. It would be way easier to disarm the police than the general population (and the police can quit if they don't like it). None of them have ever answered my question. They aren't gun banners, they're weapon's collectors, they want the government to collect your weapons. They won't stop with guns either.

The Brady folks gipe and whine about petty criminals and say how "safe" we'll all be once the government has all the guns. Sure a criminal can make a mess, but compared to Mao, Hitler, Stalin, Amin, Castro, Pol-Pot, Mugabe and countless other mass murders they're just pathetic little jerks and are usually pretty easy to put out of business.

The Brady folks promise what only God can deliver. No one can make you safe. You can't own enough guns to be safe or ban enough guns to be safe. Life isn't safe, never was never will be.

While only 25 percent of Americans own a handgun

This is based on a survey, this is from their site;

This was shown in 1994 when the Police Foundation, with funding from the U.S. Department of Justice, conducted the National Survey of the Private Ownership of Firearms (NSPOF), the most comprehensive survey to date specifically designed to gauge the size and extent of America's "domestic arsenal."1 The study was authored by Philip Cook of Duke University and Jens Ludwig of Georgetown University. Published in 1996 as Guns in America, the study found that, contrary to popular perception, of the 192 million guns in American hands, far and away most are rifles or shotguns: totaling 119 million (70 million rifles and 49 million shotguns).

I always ask two questions when there is a survey

1. Are certain groups of people more likely to answer this survey?

2. How many people will honestly answer the survey?

If "the Police Foundation", with funding from the U.S. Department of Justice asked me about my "domestic arsenal" do you think I'd tell them a darn thing? Do we really believe that there are only 192 million guns in our nation? Just because 1/4 of the people surveyed were dumb enough to disclose to "the police foundation" what guns they have we can't assume that that reflects true numbers.

For what it's worth. Most gun owners I know don't own handguns.

In rural areas there's little need for them. My family has loads of guns, but not many of us have handguns. In the urban areas it's often the only kind of gun you can shoot at the indoor ranges.

Personally, I'm not a big handgun fan though I do own some. It would not impact my quality of life to a large degree if I had to get rid of them. But, what gives Sarah Brady the right to steal from me and dictate to me the terms of my existence? Do I get to tell HER what kind of car she can drive? Can I tell her to get out of her car and walk? (cars kill cyclists so she has no right to own a car or even to be a passenger in one). The exercise would do her good, it's for her own well being after all.

Pedal biker,
I'm sure there are fewer handguns than long guns for your reasons. Just pointing out that a survey like this can not be taken as accurate.

So what kind of biking do you do?
I'm a mountain biker, ride a specialized fsr
have a road bike for when I can't get to the trail.

PedalBiker - that's odd.

I would have expected it to be the other way and that more people would own a handgun for home protection than anything else.

Funny how these chickensh**s never have a "contact us" link.

Cowards.

Correction, I found one, sent them a flame and ask them to quit stomping on my constitutional rights and blame the criminals, not their tools.

Every handgun aimed at you

If every handgun is aimed at me then the rest fo the people on the face of the earth have nothing to worry about.

However since I now seem to be out gunned, I'd better go buy another gun tomorrow

jeepmor,
they don't respect you 2nd amendment rights, why would they respect your first amendment rights?

Flame them all you want.

They think that because a "majority" (37%:neener: ) thinks a certain way it is correct. That is very sad. It's like the "global warming consensus" If a big enough group think a certain way by peer-pressure default it must be.

Well let's use their logic;
(don't get offended, this is just to point out how stupid the gun grabbers are. I don't hate gays, I'm not a homophobe, I just bat for the heterosexual team;) )

So everyone---this is satire!!!

Less than 5% of the nation is homosexual, yet more than 25% of Americans think it is morally wrong. We need to have the government round-up all the homosexuals! It's for the children! Every homosexual is being gay at you!

Hope that made sense and didn't offend...if it did't, I've poured the gasoline, flame away!

37% does not a majority make. What about the remanining 63%?
Haft of the other 63% must be illegals :neener:
If you throw enough crap, it's bound to stick somewhere  This is the spray and pray strategy.

"I liked their "Resources" page. Not a single link to a stats website. Only links to studies conducted by people in Chicago.

You weren't hoping for credibility here, were you? ;)

I wonder what percentage of eligible Americans own a handgun?

Well, I'm not an American yet, but I do own more than a handgun.

I wonder how many eligible American citizens + eligible Permanent Residents own handguns?

Quite a few of my co-workers are permanent residents too and I've turned them on to firearms ownership, they all come from countries with either no ownership or strict control.

I guess people here (USA) have had the right for so long they take it for granted while a minority of people erode that right from under them with an "Aye" and the stroke of a pen...
