My project Winchester 1906 pump action. Old original barrel bulged about 3" from chamber, not suitable for re-lining.
Got me a replacement old used barrel in good enough condition to re-line. Before starting out with the re-lining I tested the fit in my receiver.
New barrel comes up hard about 1/8 turn (NOT torqued or tightened) before extractor / feed ramp being indexes properly.
I measured the threads on the receiver to be 24 Tpi. Is that a reasonable amount to take up with torquing or am I gonna need the services of
real gunsmith?

That's gone to be pretty close to what you want. Once you remove the old one you can compare it to see if it's too much or not. A good action wrench and barrel vice is a must.

The 1/8" is about what I get when I'm fitting a barrel nut to a AR barrel on custom barrels. Torque is in the neighborhood of 90+ft/lbs. I loose about 0.001" in the chamber.

is there a torque spec? never done that job, but 1/8th of a turn sounds about like most large bolts to tighten.

Think I found a gunsmith a bit north of where I live. I think that if I want this rifle to be fairly nice and not screwed up,
that I have someone that knows what he's doing to install the newly re lined barrel. I love the woodwork and refinishing, metal
cleaning & polishing is great, but when making a mistake will cost me a barrel or receiver, well - - - - I'll pay a pro.
