barricade practice

On some "tactical" websites I have seen competitions with people shooting off barricades, angled walls, etc. Is this 3-gun? Is there a standard height for these obstacles or is it just whatever the competition has? I'm looking to build my own barricade "practice park" and was wondering what sizes they should be.

Are they using a shotgun, rifle, and handgun? Then probably three gun competition. There are also games played with just rifles/carbines. It's been a long time -15 years - since I shot IPSC and three gun. Barricades varied with the creativity of the stage designer so there was no standard configuration. Also, rules in various competitions are different. In some cases, there is a fault line even with the edge of the barricade extending back towards the shooter. You got a penalty - foot fault - if you stepped across the line. The idea of course was to avoid exposing your body while shooting. The barricade usually represented cover, not just concealment.

for 3gun (carbine,pistol,shotgun) i don't believe there are any "standards" and it's mostly "whatever the competition has" but there are very popular barricades you are likely to encounter like the vtac (from kyle lamb's book) and rooftop simulators


over the past few years, I've started a few threads on this topic for precision rifle, and you can see several barricades in there to get some ideas. though probably the best thing to do is simply a google image search for "prs barricade" and "3gun barricade"

recently the PRS did standardize some stages to be included in every match and two of them involve barricades with set dimensions. you can read that on their website.

in addition to the rooftop, other popular styles include

tank traps:


walls with random ports:


cargo nets:


flanges or wooden wire spools:


shoot houses (or mousetraps):

the VTAC barricade is probably one of the best training tools you can get for the money.

1 standard piece of plywood makes 2 barricades.....and your training possibilities are endless.

they will quickly reveal any weaknesses in your shooting, as everyone practices shooting while standing up on a nice calm range........but shooting out of position, at odd angles will put you out of your comfort zone and make those "easy shots" about 10x harder.....especially when coupled with a shot timer.

search facebook for pictures of the rock lake precision rifle series match weekend before last.

they had a stage where they took a small wooden wire spool and nailed a horse head onto the front of it and you had to shoot off it.
