Never been out that way , how is their gun selection and what are their prices like? Is it like a bigger Gander Mountain? Worth a trip just to look around? Any info comments welcome!!!

The Bass Pro in Houston( acually in Katy, west of Houston) is worth a look around. I used to buy smokeless powder from them, but the priced got to high. They have aldo quit carrying most reloading supplies. BIG, kids will love the fish tank.:D

PS The Mall is posted 30.06 but Bass Pro isn't.

all their handguns fit in two smaller cases. I did not see more than a few brands represented. I asked the counter guy if they dealt in used guns, but he says that their location is heavier on archery. There is a good selection of rifles and shotguns i suppose, but gander mountain definately has more guns/better selection.

I used to work behind the gun counter when BPS first opened. Only pistols at the time were black powder. Occasionally, they will get some great rifles in at fair prices (Tikka Whitetail Hunter that Xmas), but most often it is the same general stuff you can find elsewhere at better prices. Shotgun prices are reasonable, and you can ofttimes get a guide gun for a good price, .22's too. I wouldn't trust their judgement on pistols. Probably overpriced junk.

One thing you got to remember about Bass Pro, they are a tourist trap store. They carry just enough 'cool' stuff to lure you in, and you're too busy staring at the fish tank to notice when they rip you off. About the only thing I go there for now is the fishing tackle. You'd do better at Carter's or Collectors or even Academy.

I also hear they are opening a store on the Beltway at Hwy 288. Anyone in Houston know if this is true?

Why wont someone come to Houston and open a REAL gun store that stocks a good selection at decent prices and sell at volume?????

yes it's true, don't know exactly when it'll open, the walls and roof were in place last i passed by.

personally i don't and, even after the one at 288 and the beltway goes in, won't make any special trips to BPS for gun stuff. Probably wouldn't go there at all if i could readily find jeans in my size at a decent price elsewhere.

unfortunately what you are suggesting is in most markets contradictory. if a gunstore stocks a large varied selection then they will need to charge prices that will allow them to not only recoup their investment in the guns they actually sell (and their facility), but also cover the expense of all the stock that just sits there for an unknowable amount of time untill the one person in houston that has both an interest/desire for that item AND the money in/on hand to buy it walks through the door.
On the other hand if a dealer is to have good prices he must look at his actual market and only keep in actual inventory those guns and supplies that will sell well and not only cover his overhead, etc but profit him enough to make the business worthwhile.

ask ten gunowners to define "REAL gun store" and what they would want to find there, and you'll never get a consistent enough answer to make the stocking decisions noted as "needed for having good prices". in other words everybody wants a different mix of "stuff" and a store would go bankrupt trying to stock a large enough selection to keep everyone happy.

Gander Mountain, Cabella's and Bass Pro Shop all are over prices on their guns.

That being said - the store is nice, and I actually prefer it to Cabellas.

In terms of selling on a volume basis, I could buy guns CHEAPER at a gunshop in Boston that was packed every saturday morning because they had such good prices and sold in a volume basis, than I can in Houston.

Gander Mountain is selling used guns at the same prices I can buy them new from an FFL such as Buds Gunshop.
