Two weeks ago I bought a used super blackhawk .44mag.
Made in 1981, it has an amazing polished blue finish, it was in the case at my favorite gunshop, when I bought my new redhawk. It called to me ever since.

IT appears to have had some workdone to it. The topstrap is drilled and tapped for a weaver mount, the hammer is jeweled on both sides, cylinder bores appear to be polished, and a trigger job maybe. the other thing the owner did was put a big scratch on the aluminum ejector housing, where it looks like he took a screwdriver to it to pry it off and slipped (maybe he forgot to take out the screw first???) Someone had blackened the scratch with a marker, but I spotted it, resulting in a lower price.
I paid $275 out the door with all fees.

The rest of the gun was in brand new condition, maybe only 1 box of ammo or even none!!!

I took it to the range a couple of times now and I'm shooting 240 LSWC over 7.0 grains of Unique (1000 fps) which is quite manageable recoil wise. Its very very accurate at 25 yards.

I was hoping for some advice on grip technique, do you let it roll, or hold it firm, Use one hand or two and where do you put your other hand if you use two????

Has anyone mounted a scope, on one for hunting, and what scope did you choose? (sacriledge? I may not)

Thanks

When I shoot a single action revolver, I get a good firm, (not white nuckle tight) grip that is consistant. Then when I shoot I let it roll. SA's are designed to roll back in your hand.

Depending on my mood, and the loads I am shooting I sometimes use one hand, but usually use two. More control, and better accruacy. Especially with heavier loads. My right hand is the one on the grip, with the left hand wrapped around it in a supporting manner. Just like when shooting a DA revolver or an auto.

As for the aluminum ejector rod housing, call Ruger and order a steel one. Looks better, and adds 1 ounce of weight out front where it helps.

I have never mounted a scope on a handgun. I belive it totally defeats the purpose. Handguns by design and nature are supposed to be handy to use and light to cary. So any scope issue will have to be answered by others.

And I won't tell your wife.

If she doesn't ask, I won't tell ;) Seriously, congrats! I recently had a chance to shoot a box stock version and almost immediately added it to my ever growing wish list :D

The Blackhawk grip is designed for you to let it roll back. I understand it is designed after the old Colt grip design meant to be shot from horseback(?). In any event, I am much more comfortable shooting that grip with one hand -- if I shoot two-handed, my off-hand keeps searching for the right position. If I go up on the grip with my off-hand too much, the trigger guard pounds my finger with most 44 loads. If I move my off-hand down and too far back, the "plow-share" grip edges dig into the palm of my hand.

I love the 44 BHs, but have to admit I like Ruger's Bisley grip better.

You might consider some after-market grips, although so many of the Hogues have finger grooves which, to me, ruin the traditional look of the BH. Shooting gloves may help as well.

most revolvers with wooden grips are made to roll back or upwards when the shot breaks.
freedom arms are very smooth even in 454 475 etc,the ruger is the same way.
rubber gripped wheelguns tend to recoil back towards you.
HOW MANY OTHERS HIDE GUNS FROM THEIR WIFE?

I'M GUILTY.

Velocity is going to depend on multiple variables. Capacity of the case, bullet seating depth, chamber dimensions, cylinder throat diameter, barrel-cylinder gap, bore diameter, bore finish, barrel length. That being said, Rugers have a long history of giving higher velocities than most other manufacturers.
