I picked up a Smith and Wesson 27-2 a few months ago and I recently gave her a miniature spa treatment. I took a hint from Jimfern and I used a little Flitz polish to address some surface rust and then I used the Flitz gun wax. Then orionengnr hooked me up with a set of N-frame Target grips so the less than beautiful Pachmayr grips had to go. Now it’s time for a trip to the range. She's not perfect; there are some bad spots on the cylinder. But I'm happy with the results.

***Sorry about the crappy photos.***

Puttin' rubber grips on a 27 is like puttin' snow tires on a Ferrari!!

You got yourself a fine lookin' "Sunday go to meetin' gun" there now.

A big improvement.

Although I don't care for the targets on the short barrel gun. Makes it look big in the ass. Very unbalanced. IMO S&W made a mistake in 1974 when they started putting Targets on the 27s. The Magnas look and work better.

If it's for a serious purpose, you use what works for YOU, and for me, that's definitely NOT S&W Targets. They're too big and prevent me from getting a proper double-action grip.

I have either Pachmayrs or Hogues on all of my S&W revolvers, except for my M&P, which has factory grips and a Tyler T-Grip.

Hogue makes some BEAUTIFUL wood grips that are the same shape as their rubber Monogrip. You can have the looks and the feel!
Of course, if you shoot heavy magnum loads, the wood doesn't absorb recoil as well as rubber.

I had some on my SP101 before selling it.

I went with the Target grips because:
1) I have large hands and the grips fit my hand perfectly
2) They are the original equipment for the year this M27 was manufactured

Always loved the looks of the Target grips, tho' point taken about a butt heavy appearance with the shorter barrel.
Problem for me was recoil, with the big grips catching me in the joint of my thumb; that, and it is a reach for double action shooting.
The wooden Hogues are handsome and a good fit; have a set on a M-25, tho' that is a mild kicker.
Rubber grips are a mixed blessing. The OEM grips on the Ti Centennials stick too well; be better if the gun can slip a little in the hand, rather than tearing your skin.

Functionality may be a bit to get used to if this is a real shooter, however, with that being said, I also think you did an excellent job with it and it is prettier with the wood furniture.

I'm jealous.

Personal preference. I just find the Targets way too big to look right with the 3.5" barrel.

I think this looks better.

And this.

Even on the 5" I think the Magnas look good..

The O/S target grips over power the lines of the 31/3" models. I have a set of the O/S targets on my 6" an think they look better than the magnas on that barrel.

Love those M27s, especially the 3 1/2" version. Classics in the class with 1957 Chevy Bel Air Convertibles!

Here's one from the year 1970, a 27-2 with magnas serial numbered to the gun . . .

:D Clearly beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have removed the smaller grips from some of my guns to add the Target grips. It could be a matter of functionality. I can't grab the Magnas well; this may have made the Target grips beautiful to me.

The Model 15-6 that I just bought will get new grips ASAP because the factory grips are too small.

S&W Fan,

That thing is beautiful.

Sometimes a gift from a friend will work too.

Or if you like targets but they are too big, find a beater pair and make them work for you.

Heavyshooter,
No, I didn't do that pair. A guy on the S&W forum did them for me.

He patterned them after this pair I built for myself for my model 58 duty gun back in 1966.

Here is another pair he did for me.

This was a pair that were really boogered up I got for cheap. He repaired the problems, reshaped, and refinished them for me.

If you decide you are interested in something like this, I'll get you connected up with him.
