I know I should have checked on magazines before buying my AR-10, but I just ASSUMED it wouldnt be hard to get them or super expensive since the ban is over. Boy was I wrong! No one has the new style, they are all backordered. That is a shame, but nothing is perfect, so I ordered some from impactguns for $39.99 each and was told it will be at least two months. On the Armalite website they are $44.95.

So then today I get an email from Impactguns saying the price has gone up from the manufacturer and I need to call them to let them know if I want to keep my order with them. The new Impactguns price is $47.99!!! So what is the Armalite price going to be I wonder?

I like my AR-10 and I am not saying Armalite is the run by Satan or anything, but just realize the magazine situation before you buy an AR-10. If I would have been smart about it and researched a little before buying I probably would not have bought this rifle. Knowing my luck it is going to be six months before any mags are available and somehow the ban will take effect and I will be stuck with one 20 rd mag!!!

In the last two weeks, I bought four from Armalite and four from Gilberts and three ex-LEO NIW old style magazines from CDNN. I was unaware that they were hard to find, or I'd not have bought these.

Thats pretty funny.

And strange, I just called Armalite today and one week ago and both times they said they were back ordered. CDNN said they were out last week and just now as well. Any other sources you know of?

EDIT:

Alright wise guy, Gilberts has some, I just called. I have never heard of them, but thanks for the tip.

Don't they use M14 magazines?
Yes, but the M14 mag has to be modified with a mag catch hole. Also, if you want the AR-10s BHO to work, you have to swap out the M14 follower for an AR-10 specific version.

In the end, it's generally cheaper to buy a NIW Armalite magazine rather than convert an old M14 magazine (unless there's a ban on, and pre-ban M14 mag bodies are all you can find).

I live to serve. :D

I just got off the phone with Armalite; they will sell (and currently have in stock) individual followers for the AR-10 magazines. The part number is EA5090, and they cost $4 each. You'll also need an EA5093 plunger for $2.

This means that an enterprising soul could buy a bunch of M14 mags, replace the follower assy, and mill the mag catch hole - and get a bunch of mags in their hand sooner rather than later. They'll be the old style and not the new style, but my old style have been flawless.

Just an FYI....

Well that sounds like a good idea. With bigdaddys cheap M14 mags and the follower and plunger from Armalite, I might be hooked up with some $30 mags if I can use my dremel correctly to ream the mag catch hole. Thanks for the ideas :)

Yuk. Didn't know that, thanks. I was thinking about one, that changes things somewhat.

Well, it turns out that if you get the 44mag M14 mags and the Armalite followers that I traced down, you can cobble up an AR10 magazine for around $30. That's not bad....

First thing you're doing wrong is buying from Impact guns...

Armalite now offers a 2nd Generation mag. it is all different from the current "M14" based mags. It requires a different bolt hold open catch lever, and does away with the plunger on the follower(it is more like an AR15 mag now)...it is worth doing.

This is one reason I check the price of the magazines before buying the gun.

I hate having to shell over $40-50+ for a magazine.:cuss:

You think getting a Mag for an AR-10 is bad? Try owning a P7M8, or god forbid a P7M10/13. I'm pretty sure H&K mines them in some third world country and throws out the diamonds they sift through before they uncover a magazine.

I was on a 2 week backorder from http://www.gunclipdepot.com a few months ago. Got them pretty quick and paid like $45 for the 2 I did get. The old style magazine that came with the gun when I bought it has issues, but I dealt with it for the 2 weeks. I've yet to shoot it since I got the new mags to do scope issues, though.

High quality magazines, that are made by the same manufacturer who makes the firearm, have always been somewhat expensive. Yet, well worth every penny as I see it, at least for carry purposes.

In my issue Glock, I carry Glock magazines, in my many Berettas, I have always carried Beretta mags. I have tried aftermarket magazines from time to time (just at the range mind you, never for carry) and often have found them to be unreliable. You often get that for which you pay. So if you do find a quality aftermarket magazine, it would probably tend to be expensive.

All the best,

I was thinking about buying one of the old L.A.R. Grizzly .45 Mag pistols. I did a check on mag prices the other day and found out mag prices "start" at $100 each. :barf:

So much for ever owning the Grizzly.

Regarding the AR-10 situation. I would do as others suggested and learn to make your own. I've bought mags from the people at 44mag and they sell nice stuff at a good price.

The AR-10 is not a poor man's rifle. I could live with paying $50 a magazine. If they are reliable. But then I have paid $60 a mag for Ruger factoy mags for the Mini-14. :)

What about the new DPMS .308? Does it require special magazines, or does it use AR-10?

You can use M-14 mags, you need to cut the mag-lock hole and grind back the top of the mag that holds the shell in place.I have done this to 6 mags and they run great,no feed problems. You can find M-14 mags cheap at gun shows.

Old thread brought back to life.
They just came off sale for $25 each for all sizes. Just keep an eye out for sales, have patience grasshopper.
