Well, now that I have a pretty substantial collection of knives in the works,I will need to know how to "sharpen" my sharpening skills.I have some Emersons,CRK Folders,Dozier Fixed and may stray from these mainstay knives at some time.I would like to get some idea of the sharpeners recommended and the how and when of each knife.I thank everyone in advance for all the help.

Heres a good vid on the Lansky Crock Sticks, it a decent sharpener!

I just use the file on my leatherman tool, I can get any blade sharp enough to shave the hair off my arm (and that's sharp enough for me)!

ps I've seen these sharpeners pretty cheap on ebay!

Couple more!

I'll second the Spyderco Sharpmaker statement.
There is nothing better in my book to sharpen and maintain your blades.

The Sharpmaker is a great sharpener, but keep in mind its forte is keeping a sharp edge or modifying your microbevel. It's not the best tool for the job if you need to reprofile your blade. I'd recommend an EdgePro sharpening system for all your needs...but that is a bit more expensive.

Hope that helps.

Read their book some years ago and have never had problems sharpening since. If you read the book, they tell you what you need and what you don't. I have a couple of expensive fine grit hones for putting on a final edge, but for a coarse hone, the cheaper the better. Sharpening properly has a lot more to do with what you're doing than what you're using.

Since becoming a knife nut I've tried all kinds of knife sharpening devices, stones and electric sharpeners. Some worked better than others and some were very useful in their limited niches. The other day I'm at the Centralia gunshow and a guy is selling new in the package Spyderco Sharpmakers for $25! I'd never seen them for less than $50 before then (had to wonder if they hadn't fallen off the back of a truck) so I snatched one up. Took it home, tried it with a variety of knives, and I have to say this is by far the best all around sharpener I've used. Every knife I've sharpened on it has come out hair-shaving sharp. I just wish I'd bought the other 2 the guy had on his table.

Thanks everyone for your posts.I will do some reading of the info listed and maybe buy a couple of the sharpeners to see which works the best. Again, many thanks.
