I'm trying to figure out the year of a fn browning humpback with a serial number in the 40,000 range. Any help would be great

This is what confuses me because there are no letter prefixes on the serial. If I understand correctly it's a 1957? Do I need to look elsewhere for the letter?

If you post photos it might help but judging solely from the 40,000 range serial number and absent a letter, it would appear to be a very early gun from the first row in the chart that I linked.

16ga has a separate serial number system from 12 ga, you can google it.

If I had to guess, late fifties to early sixties.

With no prefix, it looks like 1926.
