Who loves their 06 hunting rifles? I sure do, but I've yet to blood this one. I'm hoping that'll change this season! It's a Tikka, made 1975, and I've been promising it a deer. I've hunted with it a few times, but yet to score with it. Seems I've always got one my 30-30's, but I absolutely love them above all!
But this is an absolutely great hunting rifle, 3-9×40 Burris FFll, Warne Maxima QD Mount & Rings, because it's iron sights are excellent also, and I've yet to kill a deer with a scope.
Before anyone jumps to conclusions about it being made by Sako, it's an original Tikka, Before Sako acquired them in early 80's. And in many Finns opinions, a better rifle!? But IMO, their right! Regardless opinions, it's a Jewel, shoots everything I've put in good, some 5/8" and 1/2" @ 100yds.
I'm gonna get it in racing conditions for this fall!
But let's see them Kings of Woods! 20231201_111449.jpg 20231227_111925.jpg

Very few questions can't be answered by the '06. Folks are always on the lookout for "new" - and often conflate "new" with "better" - but for my money, 99% of people agonizing over "Which rifle?" should just go buy an '06.

Here's mine; a Ruger "Express":

Nice. Classic lines and finish. Can't tell from the pics; is it checkering or like stippling/texturing on the grip panels?

And the one in the attachement looks like a different rifle with a different checkering panel design. What's that one? Remington 700 maybe?
Yes it is, but I deleted it. 700bdl in 270. And checkering on grip also.

It has the Wundhammer Palm Swell grip, and a very unique to me factory recoil pad, both I like for use, not looks. The pad is very firm, almost like a solid, but just right for the job. And the palm swell just fills my hand just right!
My impression is that Tikka of then made an excellent grade of working man's rifle!

My first deer rifle of my own was a Ruger M77 MkII in 30-06, which I bought because I had been hunting with a .270win, and I simply liked the idea of MORE. I was reading for years as a kid that the 30-06 was the ideal rifle for all North American game species, accomplished with one rifle…

I’ve learned a lot since then, and I do find that I prefer to use less cartridge (less blast, powder, and recoil) for deer hunting these days, but I still put meat in the freezer most seasons with that old ‘ought six. It had the Ruger “Plum” discoloration when I bought it, and it has only gotten more and more rich purple in time - so I joke with some of my buddies who are also K-State grads that it was an intentional choice to improperly blue it so it would match our alma mater.

My father-in-law also gifted us his ‘73 R700 in 30-06 a handful of years ago. Right when my son was at an age where he was too young to mange a full size 30-06, but old enough to stare at it in the safe every week since then and long to be able to hunt with it himself. He begged me last season to buy a take-off stock to cut down to his length, but we didn’t get it done in time. Maybe this season… (either it or his grandpa’s 336 .30-30)

Bought my first 30.06 in 1969 with my paper route money. I was 13. It was made by Winchester for Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store. I still have it and use it at least once every season. Try as I might, but I can only get 1" groups at 200 yards. Since then, I've added a Remington 7600 in 30.06 and 2 1903s. One my father sporterized for his deer hunting. I bought the 2nd one from CMP hoping to get some original parts and stock. No joy. It looked like it had been drug through every war in the 20th Century. I checked it with go and no-go gauges and everything was good. The stock is a scant grip that I cleaned up a bit, stained and re-oiled (yes, I know they didn't do that in 1928, but it looks better). I sent the remaining parts out to be re-parkerized-circa 1928. I added a 1907 sling. Now, I just enjoy shooting it every once in a while.

Here's my 30-06!

1944 M1 Garand from the CMP that I modified to use with a suppressor. Took a little bit of work but it runs great after I adjusted the Shuster Adjustable gas plug I put in it. Used a Fulton Armory threaded gas lock adapter. Sounds pretty good with a SilencerCo Hybrid 46M on it.
Wish the GIs in WW2 had these... would've been sweet.

My first deer rifle was an old US Govt Model of 1917 Winchester, 30-06. Wish I still had it. I recently acquired a pre 64 model 70 made in 1962. I haven't gotten around to pulling it out and fooling around with it, but it is in great shape. I knew the original owner, and it didn't see much time in the field. Not the best pics of it, but what I've got so far. If I take it afield, it'll only be blue bird days that's for sure

:what: :what: :what:

I have a few, started with a R700 bdl that has a longer barrel than normal, then a R742 that has probably only seen a couple boxes of shells, 2 Howas, 1 with a short barrel and one with a longer barrel, Weatherby (Howa), 5 Garands, 2 Springfields, 2 H&Rs (best looking), and recently added a Winchester, 03a3 and 03, R783 (surprisingly accurate). I can't say I've even shot each of them but I enjoy the 06 and if I ran across a deal on one I would probably add it to my safe. I have a light load that is great out to 200yrds (probably light for 308) that gets shot a lot when we have our big yearly BBQ shoot surprises a lot of people with light recoil

A .30-06 bolt action hunting rifle was on my wish list ever since my pre-teen days when I heard a lot of praise from old timers for the old "aught six". Saw my first 30-06 round when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Back then it was the biggest rifle round I had ever seen and I never forgot it. But as I aged there were so many other desirable cartridges & rifles that I never got around to that .30-06 bolt gun for hunting. Only .30-06 I have ever owned is an M-1 Garand from the CMP and I didn't need to lug an M-1 up some of the hills where I deer hunt. Then I showed it to one of my uncles a few years before he passed. He carried one in the latter stages of WW2 in the Pacific as a young marine, and he thought it would be nice for me to fill a deer tag with it. He even told me it was already chambered for a great hunting cartridge. So I substituted a 150 gr. Accubond for the 150 gr. FMJ in my CMP match load and with a 5 round hunting clip it gets out hunting once every few years but it's never in the regular rifle rotation for deer season. Haven't scored with it yet, so perhaps I should get it out more often this fall. IMG_0205.JPG .. IMG_2991.JPG ..We got a new elevated box blind for this fall so we old timers can skip some of the steep slopes for a short trip up a ladder.

Ive had a couple 742 and 760 Remintons.
Eventually got a Steyr PH.
Unfortunately i found a Ruger #1 in .308 so bailed from .30 06.

Put the PH on consignment, still got a dozen boxes of ammo. If it doesnt sell will just keep as a loaner/ backup rifle

Nothing against the cartridge. But just dont need two .30 cals. Heck I havent shot a deer last few seasons LOL

That is a beautiful rifle friend, one that you should be proud to own.

The .30-06 is by far my favorite caliber. The only rifle I own is a Weatherby Vanguard, and I've taken many deer with it.
The rifle is nothing special, but it's responsible for every buck on my wall and I'll likely never get rid of it because of the memorable hunts I've had it with me on.

The Rem 742 in 06 is no secret! This one made in I believe 1981, and since scoped with a vintage Nikon Buckmasters 3-9×40, that I'd still be willing to use on a good bolt action! Lotta bad hype calling these jammomatic and such, but it's not true. No search needed to verify the 000's of deer killed with these, and it's cousins in pump and auto. In my area, it or one of it's relatives have been totally dependable deer riles since, I believe early 60's, but correct if wrong on the date! Cleaned and cared for, they're great rifles if you like autos. It and the Browning BAR, at or near the top of auto hunting rifles! I know this one will deliver out to 150yds probably more! Load this one with Rem 180gr CL, sharpen your knife! 20240409_171504.jpg

Reportedly bolt rail chew is a thing on 742s in .30-06
Supposedly from 180gr and heavier loads.
That and pitted chambers contribute to jamming.
Also, mags get dropped and can get outta whack

I had one, well used, and it ran 150gr factory ammo decent. Another shooter had it jam repeatedly w same ammo. Took the rifle and again it ran flawless, for me.

Difference? Im thin and solid and he was big and soft.

Think many a jam afield may have been from " soft shouldering " due to clothing and or shooter build.

Oh come on man. Looks like it did in the Sears catalog. And in 30 06

I've always felt cursed using the 06, only 2 animals I could never recover where when using the 3006. It's not the 06 fault the animals could not be recovered by that's a long story, but it put me off the 06 for a few years.

Here's the only 3006 I have that I'm putting together right now, still needs a reblue and some camo on the stock. It may not see it but this is a 1954 winchester model 70 supergrade that was destroyed by a old man with dementia and a hammer. Used a 1990s classic stock that was a bit of a job fitting to the pre 64, floorplate and follower where DLC coated by pre64win.com. talley mounts with a leupold vx-3hd 3.5-10x40 firedot.
