I was in one of the local pawn shops checking out the shotguns when I spied a four shot magazine tube extension for a Benelli. I asked the buy behind the counter how much he was asking for it, and he said "$250." I told him that seemed a little stiff and he said, "Well the ATF ruled that they are destructive devices and no more can be made or imported. That's one of the last ones that will ever be available to civilians."

A guy in a gun store said it, so it must be true. I'm calling the ATF to get my extension registered.

I wouldn't hurry... :uhoh:

I think the guy at the store is full of it. Federal law does not impose a capacity limit on ordinary shotguns. I'm not sure about Kansas, but I doubt it.

Hunting regulation often have limits - that only apply to hunting. For more information check with the Kansas Fish & Game Department.

I think the gun store guy knew something, but was wrong on which law applied. Isn't there a magazine capacity limit on imported shotguns because of the whole sporting purposes/US parts count thing? Throw a US-made stock and 10-round mag on a Saiga-12 and you're fine, but an all-foreign gun with a big magazine is illegal.

Fake edit: I was right, it's a 922r thing. Here's a thread on Benelli's forum going into detail, with scans of the letter from the ATF.

Real edit: I'm pretty sure it's illegal to put on the gun anyway, even if you were to buy that one.

I'm not actually concerned. My point was that A) the guy at the gun store tried to sell me something for at least three times what it is worth and B) tried to scare me into the sale by saying that it was rare and I would never be able to get another. The stores around here are so used to raping soldiers that I refuse to do business with all but a few of them.

So what is the deal with these extensions? 922(r)? I thought that applied to rifles.

I know one gunsmith in MN that gets around the rule by making a two shot extension domestically but for around $125. He said a four shot extension wouldn't be any problem to make. I lucked out and found a OEM 4 shot extension for $75 last year.
