I just bought a nice used Beretta 686 Onyx. This is my first O/U, and will purely be used for Trap and Skeet. I had been using my Rem 11-87 for trap and breaking around 15-20 out of 25 with it in its stock form. My 686 came with some nice extended chokes, but the lower is IC and the Upper is Cylinder and I am just not familur with them enough to know there use and how to properly choke an Over Under. My club doesnt do any doubles, so it seems it might always be 1shot, atleast for trap which is what I shoot more. I am going to order some chokes (probably Carlsons since i hear good things), what chokes should I order and should I keep with the extended types? Do you run different chokes in the upper and lower barrels? please help me, this O/U world is all new to me.

Here is my new baby.

Remember one thing - Beretta makes guns with about 5 different types of chokes, so make SURE you get the right type for your gun (it should say on the side of the choke tube itself).

Your C/IC will work fine for skeet, the IC will do a decent job for 16 yard targets, but a LM or M would most likely be a better choice. Handicap back at the 24-27 yard line, you'll be looking for the IM or F.

Most folks like to use the bottom barrel first as it tends to direct the recoil more in a straight line backwards to the shoulder. With skeet, you always shoot the "outgoer" first (except for station 8), so using the IC in the bottom and the C in the top for the incomer makes better sense

Here's a chart from Briley about identifying your chokes:

Here's another chart showing various target presentations, coupled with distance and choke selection.

http://www.briley.com/2009/sportingclays.html

Remember, skeet targets are 21 yards max away, 16 yard trap targets are, IIRC, about 25-30 by the time most folks actually shoot them

I shoot sporting clays so I usually use two different chokes as there is always a pair, and they typically are different ranges and even types of targets. You do NOT want to shoot without some choke tube in place, as you can damage the threads inside the barrel. You DO want to always use some form of grease or "never seize" on the tubes in the barrel and you do want to occasionally check them while shooting to make sure they haven't come loose.

Good luck!

Good luck with your Onyx. Mine has more than 15K rounds so far, few problems.

I use a set of Angle Port extended tubes, they are.....

Cylinder- no constriction. Bore is .732" and so is the choke.

Improved Cylinder, .010" constriction.

Light Modified, .015".

Modified, .020".

Improved Modified, .025"

I could use a tighter choke, perhaps, were I a AA-27 trapshooter, but the IM serves my needs at present.

For Wobble, Trap and 5 stand, I use IC/LM the most. Skeet sees IC/C like yours, and SC sees either IC/LM or LM/M,depending on course and load.

HTH....

Thanks guys,

Gonna order myself a Carlsons extended Sporting clays Mobile Beretta set of Modified, IM and LM i think, and use my IC and C ones i currently have for skeet...

I appreciate the advice.

I've owned a 12 ga. Onyx for +20 years. It is a treasure. I use the Beretta factory chokes.

I want a 20 ga. just like it. I beleive the current prices are around $2K; I paid $1K for mine in 1991.

Nice Gun - I don't know what brand after market chokes are in the gun, but I suggest any nw chokes you purchase are the same. It will give you more versatility to be able to use any two of the four chokes you will have without having to worry about one being longer than the other.

When shooting trap I use an improved modified and full, with a 1oz load for the 16yd targets .When shooting skeet,I use a skeet choke and a cilinder choke.I'm shooting a Beretta 686 silver Perdize. I also installed a Morgan adjustable recoil pad which realy helped to improve both the fit of the gun and my scores.
