I recently purchased the captioned pistol- it is the nickel finished, wood-gripped version. Includes 2 magazines and the original box. I tried to sell it recently and was offered about half of the $1,000 i paid for it. I was thinking this gun, being in my understanding a higher end version, would be worth more money.

Generally, in excellent condition, (which my gun is) I would be curious to know what this gun might actually be worth at retail or private sale? I am in south central Kansas, BTW

Thank you

A Beretta 84 of any version is not anything unusual and I would expect its resale to be far less than any purchase price. The 84 and the whole 80 series were great shooters though. Selling it to someone who would then want to resell it is always gonna entail a BIG hit.

The Beretta 84 (and 85) is one of the guns that have long been on my wish list, especially the nickel version. So, I do semi-regularly (several times a year) scour the auction sites for them, as well as keep a lookout in person in the used gun racks of local gun shops. They do generally seem to go around the $1000 range that you paid. You say you were offered half that. Did you try to sell it at a dealer? Of course, they will offer wholesale and not retail (and everyone, including dealers, want a good deal, so even for wholesale they may low ball you, though 1/2 of retail sounds about right). If you want to sell it on consignment through a shop, they'll help you set a good price, but they will take a cut (most around here seem to be 20%, the one I now use is only 15%). You will always get more if you sell it yourself, but then you have the headaches of dealing with any laws or regulations your state has for private party sales, you need to advertise it (and meet potential buyers), and there are the paperwork headaches and dealing with FFLs if you sell it out of state through one of the auction sites (as well as the auction site fees). Generally, to me, it is worth the 15-20% commission to sell my guns on consignment through a dealer.

Thanks for the replies- very helpful. I offered to trade it to a local dealer for another gun and got the offer mentioned. At this point I think I will put it away in the safe and hold on to it. The issue for me was the slide; I have old (carpel tunnel and/or arthritic) hands and don't easily run the slide. Using all the tricks; push/pull, etc. Still difficult. Hopefully it will appreciate in value over the years to come; may pass it down to my children.

Cock the hammer before racking the slide and see if that helps.

That particular model you describe might be an anomaly around here. About 10-12 years ago you would usually see one or two at a gun show for around $750 but no more. When I see one lately it’s hovering around $1800.00.

Your best bet would be to look at completed GunBroker auctions. That being said, Beretta 84s aren't that scarce at the moment, due to the importation of a large number from Italy last year.

Mine was an Israeli pistol and has a lot of holster wear.

I paid $300-something for it a few years back.
