When I went to the LGS to have them process the FFL portion of the transfer and ship the gun for me (they made money on my transaction which I am happy for as their kids gotta eat too!!) one of the appraisers was upset that he had been that far off on the appraisal.

For future reference, unless your state law is wonky, there only needs to be an FFL on the receiving end. You can ship a pistol yourself if the dealer on the other end will accept from a non-FFL.

That said, it runs about $100 to ship a pistol overnight through FedEx or UPS, while an FFL can flat rate it through USPS for $11, so if his fees are reasonable, it may still be cheaper to pay him to ship it.

I send handguns through my local FFL to the tune of $40, but rifles I always ship myself, generally only ~$30 insured through UPS.

Yeah...this is the first time I have sold a gun. Ever. Usually I keep them forever but this particular pistol just is not a goosebump gun and it is awesome. I'm better to sell it and let someone have a pistol that really makes them happy and use the funds to buy something I'll take to the range and appreciate.

Like another Colt 1903 or a Walther PPKS or...whatever.

So, I did a basic lookie see about transferring the weapon and decided to give the lGS $60 to ship and process the paper. I don't have to try and find a box or make a trip to the shipping place or anything. Which is good 'cause generally speaking my job controls my life - I have no control of where I go, when I get home, or where I'll be during the workweek.

So, being able to conduct and set up this whole transaction over a weekend and pay someone else to execute it for me was worth $60. If I did it a lot I'd probably do it as you say....transfer it and ship it myself.

Thanks for the suggestion and input! :)
