When I went to the LGS to have them process the FFL portion of the transfer and ship the gun for me (they made money on my transaction which I am happy for as their kids gotta eat too!!) one of the appraisers was upset that he had been that far off on the appraisal.
For future reference, unless your state law is wonky, there only needs to be an FFL on the receiving end. You can ship a pistol yourself if the dealer on the other end will accept from a non-FFL.
That said, it runs about $100 to ship a pistol overnight through FedEx or UPS, while an FFL can flat rate it through USPS for $11, so if his fees are reasonable, it may still be cheaper to pay him to ship it.
I send handguns through my local FFL to the tune of $40, but rifles I always ship myself, generally only ~$30 insured through UPS.
