Okay, A friend of mine is getting rid of arsenal. I can only afford one. He will sell me a Beretta 96 or a Glock 19 for only $300; my choice. Which would you choose? What are the pro's and con's of each. This is only my second pistol, and my first semi-auto. Help me decide.

I own a Glock 23 (same as 19 just a .40 instead of 9mm) and a Beretta 96 (along with many other guns) but with the choices given, I say get the Glock 19.

Reasons -- Cheaper to shoot, easier to carry concealed, a little less recoil (if that is a concern), shorter trigger travel than the Beretta, has a light rail (depending on generation), and better surface finish.

Anyway, opinions are like buttholes... Lots of people are gonna tell you to get all sorts of things.

(Hey, let me know if he wants to do a private sale on Glock 19 if you decide to get the Beretta. I'm interested.)

From your poll: What is an "H&K 97", and what would that or the 1911 cost?

If you meant to type "P7", and it's $300, buy it without thinking.

I can't believe that I dropped the ballot for the Glock.

NO!!!!!

I demand a RECOUNT! Examine the chads!

*sigh* Yup. I voted Glock in this case. Good carry gun and cheaper ammo means more practice for the new shooter.

I voted 1911 but if it were between the Beretta or Glock I would take the Glock without a second thought.

I've had both the beretta 96 and the G19. I still have the 19. The Beretta .40 seems to recoil more (in my hands) than any other .40 I've shot - probably a combination of large grips and less than large hands. The G19 is the one pistol that I've kept for a long period of time (I like to try the newest-greatest thing. A habit that has cost me a bundle!). The G19 has low recoil, low feeding cost, plentiful magazines, ease of carry, no sharp edges, and 100% reliability. The Beretta 96 has great looks and 100% reliability. Though other pistols may do some things better, the g19 in my opinion is the best all around defense pistol in the world today. Though both are great pistols, obviously my vote went for the G19.

What kind of 1911 is it?

H&K 97? Are you sure thats the model or perhaps he was refering to the year..?

Out of that list, I'd pick the Glock. The G19 is hard to beat as a self-defense tool...lightweight, high capacity (with pre-ban magazines), robust, simple to operate, and totally reliable. In addition, it'll also be cheaper to shoot than a .45 or the .40-caliber Beretta 96.

I'd say get the Glock 19 -- I love the 9mm. :D If your friend would sell you a Beretta 92FS -- I have voted for that. The Glock fits almost every holster out there and it's cheaper ammo so more range time. This coming from someone with two Beretta Ms -- get a 92FS the next time around and take the Glock for now.

Glock

Buy the Glock in .40 either model 22 or 23. Ammo in .40 is coming down in price.

If you get bored, you can then buy a .357 Sig barrel and a 9 mm conversion barrel from Lone Wolf and have the option of shooting multiple calibers. (Keep it loaded with .40 for self defense because it may not be as reliable in a diff caliber.)

If you buy a 9 mm Glock, you have to get a new slide to shoot .40 and .357 so .40 is the way to go IMHO.

I'm ready to join the dark side and go with this kind of setup. Not just for the option of shooting different calibers with one gun but also because Glocks shoot well and are well backed by the factory.

Beretta's are real nice shooters too but I give Glock the edge.
