Does anyone have anything good to say about these guns? If they are so bad (cracked frame, etc.) why does Beretta make them. Is the issue of cracked frames limited to a bad batch or is it a design problem. I ask these questions because I really like may of the design features associated with this gun and I'm looking for a small caliber BUG. Any help would be appreciated.

Run a search on the Tomcat. I'll wager that a half-dozen threads have been started on this very topic on this very gun within the past two months alone. Everyone who has one or who has had one at one time will weigh in; and everyone has strong opinions one way or the other.

I bought one for the wife two years ago (she loved the feel and fit in her hand), and the trigger crapped out after 66 rounds. The number of stovepipes and FTEs that we experienced before getting it to that point is anyone's guess ... more than a dozen, for sure. Months later, and only after a great many phone calls and emails and complaints and shipping at my expense, Beretta replaced the original with another Tomcat. It now sits in the box. Personally, I wouldn't trust it as far as I could toss an elephant ... but that's just me.

I have a black one with night sight (yup, just the front sight), and in the admittedly small amount of range time it's seen, it has run flawlessly. I like the little critter, but only have it because I paid $90 for it NIB. For the standard $300-$400 they retail for, I have other priorities.

I have had an INOX Tomcat for 5 years now and mine has been a good gun, every time I go to the range even if I’m not particularly practicing with the Tomcat that day I pull it out of my pocket in whatever current state of maintenance it’s in from being carried every day and shoot the ammo that had been carried in it, even dry and full of pocket lint it has always functioned reliably, it’s also pretty accurate for pocket gun.

Most of the problems you hear about with this model are with the early blued Tomcats, the narrow slide didn't have enough weight to absorb the recoil energy so it would cycle to fast and with too much force and beat the frame to death.

The INOX (stainless) Tomcats and the newer blued Tomcats have a much wider slide and do not have the problems the early ones did.

However there are still older blued Tomcats in dealer/distributer stock that have just not been sold yet, they are now kind of mixed in with the new Tomcats and it wouldn’t be uncommon at say a gun show to see a new (older narrow slide) blued Tomcat at one booth and a new (newer wider slide) blued Tomcat at another.

Beretta should have recalled the older blued Tomcat and updated them with the new wider slide rather than just addressing the ones that get used and come back with a cracked frame and a confused and/or pissed off owner.

I guess the bean counters at Beretta figured it would be cheaper to hope most of the old blued Tomcats just fade away but things like this damage the reputation of both the model and the manufacture.

Here are some comparison photos between my INOX slide and a older Blued slide.

newer model

Mine is a newer model blued version. I have put many rounds thru it and no problems as yet.

Good points- tip up barrel for those that have trouble racking slides.
easy to conceal in a pocket holster

Bad points- dont let your grip get too high or you will get bit by the slide

Waiting for my permit coupon so I can pick mine up - hopefully it will be here tomorrow. I bought a used Inox "wide-body". For such a small gun it sure felt ok in the hand.

I haven't read of any problems with the inox frame's cracking as the blued ones did/do. The store had a new blued one, and, as nicely shown in the pics above, the slide size is quite noticable.

Looking forward to mine as a real "go anywhere" carry piece.

I appreciate all the information but...

..I went with another "troubled child", a stainless Interarms Walther PPK. The Walther seems to generate almost as much controversy on this site as the Tomcat. I've owned Walther's in the past, and even swore off of them, but they keep drawing me back. I'm hoping that this little blaster will be the answer to my warm weather carry question.

Enjoy. I loved my Interarms PPK/s...used as a BUG for my duty 92F and for CCW. Never had a single problem with it. Sort of wish I still had it, but I have a P99c that's the same size (and why I went for even smaller this time).

I got the Tomcat - so far so good...a quick 15 rounds last night without a hitch. Aiming will be a bit tough - that small silver front sight is tough for me to pick up! (indoors anyway).

Can anyone let us know by serial number series when the change was made.

That way if I want to buy a GOOD blued model I can just check the serial number.

Thanks in advance.

wide body tomcat

So anyone figure out when they made the switch (serial #) for wide slide blue models?

i have a Tomkat on layaway at my local gun shop i should have it by July , i am behind in some of my bills thats why i cant wait to shoot it when i get it its halfway paid for, even if it does have problems since the one i am getting is brand new out of the box never fired i can always send it back to have it repaired, they are a pretty good gun for its size.
