Massachusetts has an approved firearms roster just like California. More information can be found here https://www.mass.gov/lists/approved-firearms-rosters

The California roster is for new sales. The OP asked about possession. Does Massachusetts really limit possession to a list?
Someone more versed in Massachusetts law can answer that better than I can.
I don't think Massachusetts approves of any firearms. They restrict sale of new guns to a specific few because that's as far as they can push the issue. The list referred to contains approximately 1120 entries, but each SKU is listed separately so every chambering, designation and version of new gun authorized for sale must appear on the list. I presume that manufacturers must request addition and likely must provide specimens for review and/or testing to get on the list. Here is the list of approved testing labs:
