Well, I took my new Bersa 380 duotone to the range today for the first time. Checked it all over and cleaned the barrel before first test firing it. I love the ease of break down. The safety/decocker lever was *very* stiff but I thought it might loosen up with use. It has a nice feel to it and shoots pretty good (although a little low and to the left but I'll worry about sight adjustments later). After shooting a box through it, the safety/decocker lever just kept getting stiffer. Now it just will not release at all. I actually had to break it down the last time to get it to release. I see no obvious problems. It is well lubricated, but stiff to the point of unusable. The gun works fine as long as you don't need to or want to use the safety or decocker, but........ that's still unacceptable. Am I doing something wrong? Any ideas? Trade it back with the dealer for another one? Ala Dan, any thoughts? I know you sold a bunch of these. Thanks.

This is a problem that comes up regularly on the Bersa Talk Forums. Seems that some of the pistols come from the factory with a really stiff safety selector due to some poor machining. Luckily, I didn't wind up with one and have really enjoyed the pistol.

My suggestion is to contact Colorado Gun Works and see what they have to say. They appear to be one of the better Bersa authorized repair sites in the U.S. Some folks have found that cleaning up the detants on the safety selector cleared up their problems. If you are mechanically inclined, this might be a cheap option. Check out the Bersa Chapterhouse for take-down instruction for the BT380.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

It Needs Lube

Mine had the same problem when it was new. I lubricated it with BreakFree, worked back and forth it a number of times, and had no other problems. It seemed like the gun had not been lubricated at the factory.

I would try what gtd did. Use Gunscrubber or Eezox (basically any good gun cleaning oil) and try working the safety back and forth a few times. It should loosen up if there is any gunk in it. I had my slide catch stick and would not release for any reason. After I disassembled the pistol I found some kind of powder residue blocking the catch.

This is a very good pistol design but they tend to get a lot of gunk and dirt in the action and on the shooter's arm due to the blowback design. It could also be the result of poor machining as mentioned. Just trying to give you an easy cheap fix if at all possible.

Thanks for the advice......

Well, even though it *looked* well lubricated and clean, I took everyone's advice and it works much better now. I went to the Bersa Talk Forum and the Bersa Chapterhouse and reviewed the in-depth tear down procedure. Loosened the safety lever, sprayed it with solvent, dried it and then lubed it again and it actually moves again. It is much smoother now. I wouldn't call it butter smooth yet, but it moves easily with the thumb like it should. Thanks for the advice everyone. :)
