When I had the Sig-ness one of my grail guns was a P210. It still is.

Back then it was out of my price range.

But now, with the introduction of the Sig 210A, I think I can afford a $1500 gun. (It gets great reviews; I have a couple of safe queens that will make the ultimate sacrifice; and it will be my most expensive purchase.)

But as I was sipping my late-night single malt, I began to wonder what other great 9s were similar in terms of fit and finish, operation, accuracy, joy of owning one, and in that price range.

This is strictly a range gun. I won't carry it. Won't put it in the nightstand. Won't throw it in the tackle or tool box. It's to shoot and savor.

I've got a BHP that's well tuned; Colt 9mm competition, Sig 220, Walther P5, and a Luger, so those are off the table.

Wondering what else I could consider.....Sig, S&W, Walther, other? I don't want plastic as I have enough good ones in polymer. Wadda ya think?

Everyone has a different idea regarding what is "best", so that can include many candidates, but most would agree, and I do, that the Sig210a is one very special and desirable 9mm and would be fun for the range. I believe you need to quench your thirst and get one. I placed that gun on my short list and may get one this year. I did say may.

STI makes some wonderful guns? Might be worth a look if you are considering another 1911.

I agree with Eugen that you need to "quench your thirst" and get a P210 Target. That was nicely phrased.

I have longingly looked at SIG P210s for many years, never coming close enough to ever afford one. If you have a couple of other guns that you're willing to part with (and not regret that you sold them off), to get a P210A, then I would say do it and find out for yourself if this is as you say the:
Best $1500 9mm??

IMO if you have always wanted that Sig nothing else you buy will satisfy that longing. You already have some very nice pistols including the BHP which would have been my only other suggestion. (other than custom builds)

Another nice (and accurate gun), although out of production, would be the HK P7. By the time you buy the gun and get some spare mags (hopefully it will come with at least 2), you'll be close to your $1500 budget.

IMO for a range gun the new SIG P210-A looks very hard to beat. I handled and dry fired one last week and saving my dollars now. I still would like to see some more accuracy tests from a ransom rest or bench but those I have seen so far are very impressive.

I'll second the HK P7, preferably the P7M8 if you can find one (I'm not sure what they're going for now so they may be above the $1500 budget). Very accurate and reliable while also being interesting from the manufacturing/design/manual of arms perspective. The gun also has quite the following so it is likely to go up in price as well. As George mentioned, grab some mags too.

Lets look at this realistically: there are plenty of 9mm's that shoot just fine for way under $1500. If you're looking to spend that kind of money you're looking for something beyond just function. With that in mind, it's hard to beat the pure svelte class that the SIG P210 has. Of course there are other guns out there, but you're not looking for a budget sleeper gun that works well for the price. I'd say get the P210.

I have an STI Trojan 9mm 1911, and IMHO this is one of the nicest shooting range guns I own. Very accurate and reliable with Fed AE or Rem 147gr. FMJ ammo.

I've got a serious desire for a CZ Shadow 2, but the Sig 210 is beautiful. There's also the Sig 226 X-Five or Six.

What about a Pardini?

Have You noted lately what an X-5 or X-6 is bringing today? Far more than the $1500 budget.

I have a pair of the 1st series, X-5's. I also have a new Shadow 2. The S2 is quite a shooter for the money. And for a few hundred more dollars one can upgrade it even more. Cajun Gun Works or CZ Custom spring kits, hammers, etc.

IMHO , the S2 is one of the best values out there today for a high end, accurate 9MM pistol.

Oh really? I didn't realize they were that high priced now.

We'll forget the X-Five then.

I handled and dry fired both the SIG P210-A and CZ Shadow 2 at LGS a few days ago. For a dedicated range target gun I would go with the SIG P210-A easily. The big grip on the P210-A felt terrific in my hand and the trigger was definitely a step up from the Shadow 2. I would bet that the P210-A would be mechanically more accurate too.

The P210 is surely a sweet piece of SIG goodness. Can't see a downside to a 210. Mags are available...$40 or so. They are very accurate, reliable, CLASSIC as anything, etc. NO downside.
