"Best" .223 based on requirements.

My friend is buying her husband a new .223 rifle (What an awesome wife!)

Anyway, here are requirements.

1. $$$$$ About $1500 to $1700 (Nice!)
2. Must have a short barrel for indoor use if necessary
3. Must be able to shoot dirty.
4. Reliable!
5. Must NOT be nicer than my Sig 556! (Just kidding) I do love my sig so trash it all you want. LOL)

saiga .223 w/ 16" barrel. based off of the AK design, so you know it is drop dead reliable and you could poor mud in it and it would still work. due to the obamanation, however, they'll run you around $600 or so.

makes a pistol chambered in .223. It comes with a ten round mag but accepts 30 rounders.

With that budget and simple requirements, she can pick any manufacturer's M4 and be in good shape. A flattop upper will allow optics like a red dot, but they aren't necessary. Expect prices of $900-$1200.

cz 527 american carbine, bolt action. the shortest, lightest 223 made, also the most accurate.
Saiga, 16 inch bbl, not only also accurate, but allways works.

The OP never stated what type of action. Bolty, semi, or other... There are literally 100's of options with that budget... What kind of accuracy does this person want? What kind of shooting?? 100 yards?? further???

Yes sir, I left it way too open. But those are the requirements given to me. I spoke with him about guns a bit and he wants something that will afford home protection and short perimeter (100 yard) protection.

Kind of like a SHTF situation where you need to protect the house from "zombies" for lack of a better term.

Quality, reliability, American made would be good. Lots of accessories would be good also because he likes toys. (who doesn't).

Something you would recommend to a friend who needs to protect the house and yard.

Sorry I can't give a better description, but that's all I have. I guess if there are things that are really important that I missed, you can add them.

He likes my Sig 556 a lot, but if there is a wiser choice, then list that too.

The XCR meets those requirements rather well,except not being cooler than your sig.

There are other good choices of course but the XCR would be my pick.

M4 style carbine of some flavor. I'd personally lean toward a 16" barrel, midlength gas system, flattop upper.

Taliv knows his AR's, so his recommendation is worth consideration.

Otherwise, look at some of the offerings from Sabre Defence, or Rock River Arms.

Consider one of the models with the floating hand guards, as they will be more accurate than the others.

Given the stated price point, skip right past the .223 AK's, they're not nearly as modular as the AR-style rifles, generally not as accurate, and have goofy ergonomics.

Avoid the AR pistols. They have some utility as a close-up defense weapon, say for instance as a car gun, but other than that are generally just range toys.

I'd say any old M4 flat-top setup from a respectable company should do. DPMS, Rock River, Bushmaster, Stag, or a few of the higher-end manufacturers if you can find something. It sort of depends on if accessories are included in the $1500-1700 or not. At the minimum he'll need a rear sight if it isn't included, as well as a couple boxes of ammo. Also, the less we/you/her/him spends on the rifle, the more we/you/her/him will be able to spend on MAGS, and mags are a good thing.
