Have been reloading 223's with Hornidy 55 FMJBT over 20.5 IMR3031. Nice rounds and prints just like my factory ammo does at 100 yrds. 1-3 inch groups now that I have Eotech517 on her.
55 GR. SPR SP IMR 3031 .224" 2.200" 21.6 2907 41,100 PSI 24.6C 3233 52,500 PSI

I'm with RC on this one.

I managed to find RL-15 one day in an LGS and picked up 8lbs. Although not ideal, it has been running flawlessly behind 55gr pills. I have a few loads worked up, for different rifles, ranging from 24-26gr, that work for ME. Use at your own discretion.

Be careful and work your way up on any powder.

I like 55gr Dogtown HP's with H335 or CFE223

But... powder depends on what ya can get....

IMO RL-7 "can" be used in the .223 but only with the lightest bullets because it's on the fast side for that cartridge. I would use a slower powder and jump to at least RL-10x for the .223. The good news is, you can use RL-10x for loading the 45-70 and there is data on the Alliant site and several current manuals.

Why do so many reloaders try to use only 1 powder for several cartridges which are so different? Years ago there were only a handful of powders and we had to make due with what was available. Now days each company has A LOT of different powders so why not try to use the best powders for the job?

Thanks, I just wanted to know if he could experiment with different loads with something we already had.

I use both RE-7 & 10x for .223 with 55FMJBT. Works great. Prefer the RE-7.
I get 2885 fps out of 21.5 grs. RE-7. OAL 2.254".
For comparison, LC XM-193 factory gives 3106 out of the same M4gery.

IMHO The best has already been mentioned and I have tried many variations. 25g of H335 and the cheap Hornady 55gr bullets shoots under a MOA in 3 different rifles.

Rocky Mountain Reloading has 55 gr FMJ for $79/1000 including shipping and 5% off with THR promo code thehighroad5 (enter THR ID in the order comment box) - http://www.shop.rmrbullets.com/223-...ing-FMJ-BT-1000-Ct-223-55-RMR-FMJ-1000-Ct.htm

You can get down to $72/1000 + 5% off if you buy in larger quantities.

I am not sure if you can find 55 gr FMJ any cheaper than $75/1000 (or $68.40/1000 for quantity) shipped to your door.

Dammit. I wish you hadn't posted that. I didn't really need any but the lure of 7.5 cent bullets was just too damn much.

Does anybody know if there's a twelve step program for gunaholics?
