I'm probably going to give away all my boxes of Remington Golden Bullet .22LR during the holidays. They make any gift-exchange package a little better.
I'm going to want to replace them with at least a few boxes of something else. I never shoot rimfire, and I wouldn't even have a rimfire gun except for this early 3-screw Ruger Single Six. I guess I keep it in the safe for when kids come over, but I don't have little kids anymore. My own are the youngest in my family for their generation and they've all been big enough to shoot a Vaquero or S&W L-frame for a long time now. Maybe I should trade it for that Winchester Model 12 I've always wanted.
Being a revolver, it's not particular about which .22LR ammo I feed it. But there still must be some better than others. Looking around locally at what's available, I see the real cheap stuff like Aguila and Armscor. I haven't tried those, but I don't want the dirtiest, cheapest stuff if it's junk. I see some CCI Green Tag but I can shoot my 357 handloads for about the same. They might be worth it for a rifle, but I don't think they'll add anything to the 5.5" wheelgun. I can get:
CCI standard velocity 40 gr. LRN
Winchester Super X 40 gr. LRN
Federal Champion 40 gr. LRN
Browning BPR 36 gr. HP ( 5 cents each )
Besides what's available locally, I could probably order from Powder Valley, Brownells or Midway since I'll be paying for some shipping from one of those places eventually -- I'd just wait until I had a bigger order from there and add the 22LR on to that.
So what should I get? Chances are, I'll be giving it away again next year or the year after. What would you want to receive? Bear in mind I'm probably looking to buy at 5 to 15 cents per round. The cheaper it is, the more my guests can shoot and the more I can give away. The cleaner and more accurate it is, the better experience they'll have, and if I give it to someone with an automatic it would be better for them if it functioned.
