I know the price of ammo in general is very high compared to 5 years ago.
What is the best 5.56 to stock up on for a rainy day?

Please be sepcific with manufacturer, bullet weight and whether it is mil-spec or not. Thanks.

God Bless!

What barrel you got?

I've had excellent results with PPU 55gr in 1/12 and 1/7 barrels.

PPU 75gr OTM is great out of my 1/7.

PPU aka Privi Partisan aka Wolf Gold. Serbian made. I've gone thru 1.5k of it with no problems.

I use mostly Prvi-Partisan and PMC Gold. Both are M134 spec, as far as I know. 55gr.

For my "serious use", I have 62gr Black Hills HPBT rounds, but only about 1k of those.

black hills, blue box, standard 55 grainers, 50 per box. winny's 45 varmints, 40 per box. feddy red box, or umc , both of them in the big cartons.

Most of my stock AR ammo is:

Federal "red box" American Eagle .223 55 grn
Federal M855 5.56mm milspec 62 grn
Black Hills .223 52 grn hollow points

... in that order.

I have a couple cases of Wolf 55 grn .223 steel case but that's set aside for my 5.56 AK.

For general purpose combat use with 1/7 twist barrels from 0 to 600 yards, I would choose one of the combat proven 5.56 mm (ie. 5.56 mm NATO pressure loads, not .223 SAAMI pressure loads which run about 200 f/s slower) heavy match OTM loadings: either the Hornady 75 gr TAP (#8126N) using the OTM bullet w/cannelure or the equally good 77 gr Nosler OTM w/cannelure loaded by Black Hills, followed by the 77 gr Sierra Match King OTM-which, while exceedingly accurate, offers slightly reduced terminal effects. If your expected engagement scenario is at more typical LE distances, say out to 200 yards, then the .223 SAAMI pressure loads are fine. The experimental BH loaded 100 gr OTM exhibits impressive fragmentation, even at relatively low velocities, however, their trajectory is like a rainbow-definitely for use under 150 - 200 yards.

NOTE: For general purpose LE use, if stuck with 1/9 twist barrels, the heavy 70+ gr match OTM loads are not universally accurate in all rifles and the 69 gr SMK OTM, the 68 gr Hornady OTM, the Winchester 64 gr JSP (RA223R2), or one of the new Federal 64 gr TRU (223L) JSP, Hornady 60 gr JSP, or Nosler 60 gr Partition JSP's are the best choices to most likely run accurately in the majority of 1/9 twist rifles. You are screwed with 1/12 twists, I would probably choose the 55 gr Federal bonded JSP load (Tactical--LE223T1 or identical Premium Rifle--P223T2) in order to ensure adequate penetration.

The best LE .223 loads for intermediate barrier penetration are the 62 gr Federal bonded JSP Tactical (LE223T3) and the similarly performing 55 gr Federal bonded JSP load. The Swift 75 gr Scirocco bonded PT and 60 gr Nosler Partition JSP bullets are also good choices. The all copper Barnes TSX bullets can work reasonably well, although the expanded "petals" shear off sometimes when penetrating glass intermediate barriers. None of the OTM bullets, even the heavy 75 - 100 gr loads, offer acceptable performance through automobile windshield glass. FWIW, contrary to what many believe, 62 gr M855 FMJ also is not very good against glass. For military use, the M995 AP is the best choice for vehicles and glass.

If a short barreled 5.56 mm weapon, such as the Colt Commando, LMT/Crane Mk18 CQBR, HK416, HK 53, HK G36C, etc… is used with a 1/7 twist barrel, the 75 gr Hornady OTM, 77 gr Nosler OTM, 77 gr SMK OTM, and 100 gr BH OTM loadings offer acceptable performance, as do the LE Fed 55 or 62 gr Tac bonded JSP's and the 60 gr Nosler Partition JSP bullet; for LE with a 1/9 twist, stick with the Fed 55 or 62 gr Tac bonded JSP's or the 60 gr Nosler Partition JSP bullet. Remember, with barrels under 14.5”, the effective engagement distance is significantly reduced compared to the longer barreled carbines.

I was always under the impression that good ole' M193 was sufficient within the 200 yards frag range.

Does anyone know what the DC sniper used in all those shootings? Seemed very capable. Thank god those bastards got put away.

I have put away several different lots of Lake City XM193 55 gr. This seems to be almost the gold standard for AR ammo.I also have many boxes of the Guatamalan XM193 that was going around a couple years ago and was very well spoken of ( I haven't shot any of it, but my ammo cans haven't complained !! :D )

IMO, and what I did, was buy a "suitable amount" of M193. I only use it for occasionally checking zero, qualifications, and of course duty use.

The rest of the time, I "play" using a Ciener .22 conversion with Black Dog 27 round mags. Around $150 for the Ciener, around $25 for a BDM mag, around $12 for 550-rounds of .22 LR. You've "broke even" before you finish the first brick of .22's, considering the current cost of 5.56mm.

I agree with reloading.

I can reload for far less than the ammo discribed at Widners or for most other places, for that matter and have far more accuracy as the result.

BTW...I would suggest we stay away from comparisons with the DC snipers and the like...MHO.

Ammo

Just got this from someone at the club I shoot at. He's usually a good/reliable source.

Checked it out on The High Road and AR15 forums and it seems that this shoots very accurately at 100yds, but is a little lower than spec velocities. Good for 3-gun shoots and tactical scenarios I believe. It seems to have been out of stock for early summer and is now back--so, enjoy...

I'd trust McCain/Palin with my life before I would trust NoBamma/Biden with my wallet!

I'm going to go out on a limb here... I stockpile Wolf 62gr HPBT like crazy. The cheap, steel-cased "crap". Thousands of rounds of it.

I built all of my ARs with 1:9 chrome-lined barrels, and they all shoot the cheap Wolf stuff very reliably. It's also been pretty accurate for me out to 250 yards. If I need to go further than that, I have other guns.

I started out hording brass-cased stuff and buying the Wolf for practice only. After thousands of rounds of practice with no issues and respectable accuracy, a lightbulb went on in my head and I decided, "Hey. If this stuff works this well for me in practice, why shoot anything else?"

And the price ($240 for 1000 rounds) surely doesn't hurt. ;)

as a " rainy day " load ill say the cheapest crap my ar will run 3 mags thro without cleaning . I dont care where it shoots , i dont care how it shoots , i dont care about point of impact . I want cheap loadable ammo and as many once fired cases as i can get . Any " rainy day " thing you can dream up includes the fact that the folk who annoyou ( thro courdance or thro intellegence will consider a round fired is a round hit . Criminals look for a victom , not a contestant , and i would not expect this to change on a rainy day .

Stock up on Mk 262 if you can get it, or comparable civilian loads. All the above will tend to be pretty expensive to buy in bulk, though.

I assume this is for SHTF scenario? If so Wolf is not really "people" ammo.

Something that is M193 spec is what I would go with. It's good on humans at self defense ranges, in a wide range of barrel lengths/twists. Plus it will go through most level III steel plates, until it goes below a certain velocity.

What you can afford..I chose wolf 55 grain mil classic out of a 20" 1/7 hbar AR15. becuase its cheap and it will go bang and feed relaibly in my guns..No one is ever gonna say "what, your shooting wolf at me?,how dare you".... They will more than liekly run like heck and if they get hit, they will probaly no longer be with us.

I know they are better choices but wolf is accurate enough for me, and cheap enough for me to use as range ammo..Shoot with what you pracitce with, right guys?

NOTE: Getting the cheap brass cased ammo you can get still does constitute it being any better than wolf..

Exactly. My Wolf 62gr HPBT might not penetrate body armor at 300 yards, but it will sure ruin someone's day. And I can buy 1500 rounds for the same cost as 1000 rounds of factory reloaded brass-cased stuff.

Taurus44,

I was buying facotry reloaded HSM ammo for the same price of wolf and was hearing horror stories about facotry reloaded ammo in general kabooming. I never expereinced a problem out of 600rds but the cost did not justify e spending that much.
BTW,Where have you been geting the 62 grain at? I am looking for fmj and HP..Ive been getting mine 55 grain for $240 shipped from natchez..

Since the rainy day likely won't ever come, "stock up on" whatever's cheapest. Buy better stuff for shooting up.

Lol, PTK has "only" 1K rounds of Black Hills - yeah, you're gettin low, man - how can you sleep at night?! :D

Hey, what's likely the best-shooting kind of Black Hills for a 1 in 12" twist?

I have had good luck with silver bear 62gr hpbt in my AR. I will be trying to wolf out in the near future to see how it runs with that. I don't expect any problems, other than dirty ammo and relatively slow ammo.
