Who makes a good, reliable 50 caliber muzzleloader for the money? Don't know a thing about any of them.

Thompson Center Arms Hawken. The list price most places is $700, but you can do much better than that.

What kind of ammo do you want to shoot and how much do you want to spend?
Modern inlines mostly shoot saboted bullets or naked conicals,
while traditional guns shoot naked conicals or patched round balls.
There's inexpensive models of both types that shoot reasonably well.
They use different primers, have different safety features and scope mounting options.
There's also double barrel rifles available in both styles.
This modern .50 express double is on sale for $799 without
the scope, but it may not be legal for hunting in every state.
Check your state's hunting regulations to see which features are legal.

Do not go out and buy an expensive muzzleloader for your first gun. CVA makes a very good in line muzzleloader for about $125: Check out the CVA Buck Horn.

I have several muzzleloaders, including an Encore but none is more accurate than the CVA Stag Horn that i paid $85 for in 2000. Killed a deer with that gun this week.

Good luck with your muzzleloader.

The Lyman Trade Rifle. I bought one new last year for about $219, and it looks as good and shoots as well as rifles I've seen that cost three times as much. The Lyman GPR is also an excellent deal if you want to spend around $400 or so. Lymans cost only a little more than Traditions, but the quality is tons better, IMO.

I absolutely love my Lyman GPR .54. They make it in a .50 as well. It shoots just as good as my custom guns. And it was a whole lot cheaper
