A Glock with a grip reduction is stupidly not allowed in Production division.

I will shoot it on Saturday and then my quest to upgrade it will begin, sights magwell and possible a trigger job

A magwell will take it out of Production division, which is the main area where the 9mm and Glock 34 shine. In Limited (where a magwell would put you) it's pretty much dominated by single-action guns shooting .40S&W.

using XDM 5.25

I agree with the rest that it will be a personal preference on the gun that you choose and the class that you shoot. I am using an XDM 5.25 9mm in production for IDPA and USPSA. This was my personal preference as Glocks felt to bulky in my hands. We have a lot of members shooting Glocks and they do very well. The renting several different weapons is good advice this will allow you to get a feel for them and helps in making the decision. I am now looking at an .40 XDM 5.25 to add to my collection.

I'd also check out Brian Enos forums. I love this site, but that site is really all about competitive shooting. Just make sure if you start a post you post here and there.
