Welcome to THR!
There are many Glocks with 100K & 200K+ rounds out of them at this point so you shouldn't need to worry about what type of ammo or if the Glock will hold-up to constant practice.
I don't have a cartridge to recommend, all I want to say is that the effectiveness of any pistol & cartridge really depends on the abilities of the shooter.
You can buy the hottest load with the best expansion, but if you can't hit your target center mass, it won't matter. Just having a gun isn't enough for SD/HD.
You need to train and train and train, take some classes and then keep training. It takes months of shooting to become familiar with your pistola, then it takes years of training after that to be really proficient.
As a practice regimen for new firearms owners, I suggest that you buy a box or two of any jacketed hollow point, then buy as much FMJ as you can afford. Go to the range and shoot about 100 rounds of the FMJ. Then run 10 rounds of JHP through your pistol. Then go home.
Keep going to the range on a regular basis and shoot from 100-150 rounds of FMJ every trip and load the JHP only after you leave for SD/HD. You don't need to keep shooting the expensive JHP very often to develop the muscle memory necessary to quickly & smoothly fire your pistol, FMJ is enough.
Shoot-up your on-hand JHP supplies every quarter & replace while regularly shooting only FMJ.
Do this for 6 months to a year and then look into taking a self-defense class.
Good luck.
