Hi, I just purchased a Saiga 12 Ga Semi Auto Shotgun that will use the 12-round SureFIre mags. I would like to know the best ammo people think I should buy for personal defense. I will mostly use the shotgun as a home/SHTF CQB defense weapon. I was considering buy Hornady TAP 00 BUckshot for the gun. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I see a guying selling this stuff and was thinking I would just go ahead with it. Does anyone see any problems using this ammo? I was thinking also of buying some slugs, but mostly I am interested in the buckshot, since I would use it in home defense situation.

I am new to guns and I don't really know so much about the different shotgun bullets ,but have read some. I be interested in hearing if I am making the right decision by purchasing Hornady TAP Buckshot for my Saiga 12.

Thanks.

Don't shoot 3" mags out of the 12 round surefire mags as there is a report over on the Saiga-12 forums about the magazines failing with the heavy loads. The 2 3/4" big ole box of 00 federal buck from walmart seems to be the best buy these days. If you have the bucks for the Hornady go for it but the Federal is just as good and far cheaper. You can get 5 round mags made in Taiwan that are a copy of the factory mags for $19. The big magazines are cool but the 5 rounders are the best for me for HD due to weight and balance. Just a thought but if you need more than rounds of 00 buck for HD you are in deep Sh%t. That said I have 3 10 round AGP mags on order but the 5 rounder I keep loaded in my Saiga.

So are you saying that the Hornady 12ga 2 3/4 in buck shot rounds would be ok for my SureFire mags? THey are the only mags I have for my shotgun. I am told the SureFire mags are better quality than AGP. When you say don't use 3", that doesn't exclude the 2 3/4" bullets as well?

The stuff I was wnating to purchase has this title:
12 GA 00 BUCKSHOT TAP - FPD

http://www.hornady.com/shop/?page=shop/browse&category_id=d27c0a040bea71ad74e3d35d6bc0ec9e

Would this work for my Saiga 12ga with SureFire 12 rounder mags?

Also, what are the magnum type of bullets, I don't quite get it.

You also say that Federal is as good as Hornady? Do you also suggest Federal ammo for Rifles as well? I also have two AR15s and a AR10 gun. I was thinking about getting Hornady TAP For them all. I have not heard Federal is as good.

Which Federal brand should I get that would be on par with the Hornady TAP?

There is the link he was using 3" mags.

Yes

THey are the only mags I have for my shotgun. I am told the SureFire mags are better quality than AGP.

They AGP mags are proven to be good quality. The Surefires just came out so we will see.

When you say don't use 3", that doesn't exclude the 2 3/4" bullets as well?

I am just saying that one dude reported snapping his 12 round surefire mag while shooting 3" magnum loads

I'm sure, it is good ammo

Magnum shotgun loads are just more powerful to reach out farther or push out heavier projectiles.

Yes I believe in general Federal ammo is just as good as hornady.

Well the Tap is good military/police grade ammo and is price accordingly. At the same time you are just talking 00 buck here not match grade 7.62 Nato. I would go to walmart and buy the big value box of Federal (not winchester) 100 shells for $23

You generally can shoot anything in 3" and 2 3/4" in the Saiga 12. Just remember to keep your gas system set to 2 for the buckshot and slugs. If you want to shoot lighter rounds you may need to change it to 1.

100 shells for $23? Wow.. I am seeing the Federal listed on one website For $6.00 for 5 slugs. Is this the same stuff or is this more of a match grade style ammo?

Heres the link.

I would like some top qualitypersonal defense shotgun shells, in addition to some cheaper stuff I can bulk up on.

It is Walmart brand ammo made for them by Federal. Winchester also makes ammo for Walmart too. I am not sure what the differences are though. I like it because it is cheap and I put some of the slugs through my Saiga and they worked like a charm. I heard the buckshot does well in the saigas also. I am sure a shotgun shell expert can weigh in but I figure if you just want good HD and practice ammo how can you go wrong? If you want get a few boxes of the good stuff and keep a mag loaded with that for zombies and burglars and what not and get the Walmart stuff for fun. These Saigas burn through a lot of ammo and hell they are AK's so you don't need to feed them the best of the best.

Hornady TAP 00 buck should be an excellent choice IF it patterns well in YOUR gun. Also speer lawman 00 buck has been getting good reviews in s-12s as well.
