What is the best bang for the buck deal on a .40S&W pistol that is reliable and decent? Don't say Hi Point or any Bryco junk stuff, but what are the best deals out there? Police trade-in Glocks? S&W 3rd generations, Rugers? Dare I say Sigma? Just a good reliable, goes bang every time .40 that won't break the bank. Share with me -- educate me. :)

Pretty much the same things you listed: Police trade-in Glock, S&W 3rd Gen, Sigma, Ruger P94 variant.

I own two .40 Glocks and my preference would be a police trade-in Glock. I've seen deals as good as $330 for a LNIB Glock. Too bad I never had the cash on hand to pick one up. The police trade-ins are great, obviously because of the price, but also because they haven't been modified outside of different factory parts. Though they might need a new guide rod assembly($7-$18) and possibly magazine springs. They might even need a good detail strip cleaning of the slide.

As far as police trade-ins go, I got a very sweet deal.

I bought my second Gen 3 Glock 23 a bit over a week ago for $369 including nights sights and three mags. Turns out it was an unissued gun and was technically brand spanking new!

Hope that helps!

+1 on a Glock 22. I bought mine when my ex-wifes dept. sold them to employes for 285$ we got two. You can find them easily for 350$ - 375$ I dont really love them but they shoot good and function perfect. the only problem was the cheap plastic sights were banged up from everyday carry.

Dare I say Sigma?
Ain't nuttin' really wrong with a Sigma-I've had a few over the years.
I've moved on to other fancier/pricier/namedropper brands, but my bed gun is still a 9mm Sigma. It works, so I saw no reason to spend any money replacing it.
Sold most of my old ones to new/first time shooters, usually co-workers that had taken an interest in SD-none have complained about 'em yet.

Unless you're married to the 40, I'd seriously consider the 9mm?
I've tended to move down in caliber over the years as SD ammo has improved (stay away from those 20/25 round 'consumer' boxes!).

Just a few Sigma notes:
1. Installed a Hogue Hand All on mine
2. The rail is proprietary-may want to consider something else with a Picatinney rail if that's important to you?
3. Make sure you get an 'E' model (Enhanced)-thought I might toss that in there in case you buy used-all of 'em are now E models, which have various improvements over the original.
4. Some complain 'bout the trigger-doesn't bother me as I learned on DA revolvers. I also practice for it's intended role-I use a 'controlled trigger slap', which I see some schools are now teaching (lots of dry fire practice!).
5. A much better gun than it's reputation-most of it's bad rep comes from fans of a certain other brand that loved to run it down for being a copy-I let the laywers worry 'bout that.

HTH

If I was looking to get a good .40 that was low on the $$$ scale, I'd go with that FNP or a Sig police trade-in.

CZ

Very accurate out of the box.
Very reliable.

I much prefer my CZ75B over my Beretta 92 (and I LIKE my 92).
It's become my favorite HG.
I also have a CZ82 that was very cheap (maybe the real "best bang for the buck --about $200)

Can't go wrong with a CZ.

I've seen new "select" M&P's on sale lately for $399. I think they're 357sig's which is fine, new OEM M&P 40 barrels can be had for under $100. New dual caliber M&P for $450 including tax is pretty good IMO. The compact has a slightly longer barrel than a Glock 33 so i think it'd be a good platform for the round.

a used Glock 23, probably my fav Glock til I get my hands on the 19.

I'd recommend the SD40 over the Sigma, it's right there between Sigma and M&P quality.

I also went the dual-cartridge route by purchasing a M&P40c and a second barrel in .357 Sig (Storm Lake). I haven't yet tried the .357 Sig barrel at the range yet, it does appear to be drop in as it indeed "dropped in" and a magazine manually cycled fine.

I do very much like the M&Ps though I didn't think I would.

I like Glocks to and will probably be crucified for this but the SR40 Ruger is the best bang for the buck , nothing else even comes close. I have Glocks also and the truth is the Ruger handles better and the triggers are virtually the same. If anybody is shooting the SR40 they will soon realize it is consistantly accurate. My Ruger shoots consistantly better groups than my Glocks. The Ruger frames and slides seem to be more durable, especially the frames. The Rugers are tighter fitted and that may be the reason for the better accuracy I have been seeing.

I would check around my local pawn shops/gun shops if I were looking for a deal. If you have a LEO dealer near you that would probably be a good place to start. There is one near here & it is always interesting to check them out because of the things they get traded in.

+1 on CZ. I've been contemplating another .40 to add to my stable. The XD40SC just isn't a fun range gun. I've been looking at the the CZs again. The Stoeger Cougar is in the running as well, a ton of value in those things. If you are price sensitive, consider perhaps an EAA Witness as well.
I'm not really a polymer frame type, but have you looked at the FN line? Decent pricing, pretty nice guns. When I was 9 mm shopping, they were pretty high on the list (CZ75 won out though). A used Glock or XD is definitely worth considering. I don't think the average shooter can wear them out.

Inexpensive handgun

My vote is for the Sigma, bought one about 3 years ago when they had a rebate program going on. Ended up costing 289 and got 2 more magazines with it. It has good ergonomics for me, a lifetime warranty, and i now have about 3000 rounds through it with no feed or firing problems. Also an excellent gun is a used LEO trade in Beretta 96. Very nice shooter and price was good at 275.

What's the best 40s&w deal out there right now? I just bought a M&P 40 Pro (5" barrel) for $569, so it isn't that deal. If you don't mind the 12 lbs. trigger maybe the Sigma 40ve for under $300 is what your looking for, but mine isn't worth much on the used market & I paid $369 for mine 3 years ago . I would buy the S&W SD40 if I were buying one now if price was the deciding factor, but features were still improtant. The SD9 is more like the M&P than the Sigma. It is the best deal for a NIB 40s&w gun out there right now. I also agree that the LEO trade-in Glocks are one of the good deals out there right now, although I haven't bought anything other than NIB so far. Problem is as soon as I take it to the range it becomes used & the newness is gone. With a Glock that isn't a big deal, but with a Sigma or an SD40 it is more of a negative if you ever want to resell the gun. Just saying...

I bought a 40 cal HK USP police trade-in for under $400 a couple of months ago. It's in near perfect condition cosmetically and a great shooter. Came with three 13 round mags [two hold 14] and working night sights. I couldn't be more pleased. It's a bit large for carry, but makes a great HD pistol.

I should have shopped around instead of buying on impulse in a gun shop knowing I was going to walk out with the gun that was nestled in my grubby little sweaty hand.:scrutiny:

The choices being listed over and over will all serve you well. Only thing i can add is to check out the Beretta 96. They can usually be had used for much cheaper than the 9mm 92FS.

Some people were getting great deals on the FNP-40 recently when FN was closing them out for the FNX. Not sure what's left out there, though. That's a very nice pistol, I'm not a fan of the .40S&W round but I own the FNP-9 and FNP-45 and I'm quite pleased with both of them. I've fired the .40 and it's one of the more pleasant .40S&W pistols I've fired.
