I bought some cheap Winchester 00Buck and it was hitting high and too the left. Every Shell had the same effect, I used some Federal Shells in a Half/Half tube of Winchester and Federal and the Target had scattered Buckshot on the left side still from the Winchester and the Federal 00 Buckshot was on Target. What number of Shot is Most Effective for Home Protection a #4 Buckshot or a 00 Buck? My Local Gun stores here in Ca. Only seem to carry these two types of Buckshot?

going to depend on a lot of things, buy a few different types and pattern them to see what is going to hit point of aim

some will say #4 is too small and some will say that 00 is too big but its alot of personal choice there

Every shotgun is a law unto itself when it comes to patterning, but a few very loose rules apply.

Big shot patterns tighter than smaller stuff. It also penetrates further.

POI varies, and ONLY testing will indicate where you'lll impact with a given load out of a given barrel.

An oz of real world testing is worth more than all the Net Ninja advise ever typed.

Also, the archives have oddles of stuff including real world tests.

My Benelli spits 15 yard, 4 1/2'' (or so) patterns with Federal Reduced Recoil 00B with FliteControl wad. Hornady TAP 00B threw a much bigger, although still very good pattern. Everything else was in the order of 15'' at said distance.

If you're asking about tight patterns, I will second the recommendation for any load using the Federal Flite Control wad. Absolutely incredible stuff.

POA vs. POI is a separate issue. If you have adjustable sights, find a load you like then try to center it. If you have fixed sights (ie. bead) then separate out the loads that hit where you're aiming. From there, pick the load and pattern you like the most.

Honestly...it all depends on your gun/choke.

Years ago I patterned my 870 with a dozen different brands/sizes of buckshot with different chokes in. The best was 3" Mag #1 buck through full choke. I've killed about 10 deer with that, and within common bird shooting range they drop like they were hit with a hammer.
