I am getting ready for my cow elk hunt this weekend. I have settled on a 300 Win mag with 200 grain Nosler Partition.
I am curious as to what gun and what caliber you would use.

Just memorize these numbers for anything you wanna hunt in the lower 48..... .308 Remember that number, .308. Don't forget it... .308. Got it now? Remember, .308. You might add WINCHESTER to the back of that number. It then becomes .308 Winchester. Remember that the next time you have a caliber question about hunting anything bigger'n rabbits in the lower 48. .308 Winchester.... got it???? :D

Okay, Art. .30-06? It's your turn. :D

I killed a LARGE cow elk from 110 yards with a 6.5x55mm rifle using a handloaded 140gr Barnes XLC (no longer in production). MV was 2850fps. From memory I got 30-40" of penetration including a front shoulder bone with that combo (it was about a 20-30deg from head on shot). I'd still take a shot on a cow elk with that out to 300 yards if I had a solid broadside presentation, a good rest, and plenty of time to line up the shot.
