I'm looking forward to my 1st elk hunt. Drew a cow tag for unit 9 here in Arizona. I've been putting in for the last 4 years to no avail so we decided to go after the cows instead of the antlers. Good thing too cause I'm moving shortly from Arizona.

My hunting pardner went up in that area in August and he seen over 150 cows. Temp is down to 35 at night there so its going to be cool in Oct.

Got the -06 throwing 180gr Nosler Partitions downrange with .75" accuracy at 100yds.

2 of us drew tags but a total of 4 guys are going up. The other two wanted to join to take care of the camp and pack out meat. They also wanted to learn how to hunt elk.

Any last minute suggestions from any seasoned elk hunters?

Also, Sumpnz, are you going to make it up there? If so, where are you guys planning on camping?

When it gets cold and snowy, at least in Oregon, they come down from the mountains into lower elevation to find grazing areas. They don't like digging through the snow to eat if they don't have to.

So hunting below snowline is usually the most productive. If you get into the snowline, tracking is tons easier, obviously, but you'll be tracking them down the hills, not up.
