A painter's drop cloths works for me when i shoot handguns. The wind has frustrated me using this method.

I saw an episode of "The First 48" recently in which a decedent who had been involved in a street gunfight was found holding a handgun wrapped in a plastic grocery bag... to catch his empties. ;)

We use to use a heavy duty tarp for catching the brass. No problem with hot brass and it was easy to collect all the brass by just folding up the ends and have it all roll to the center of the tarp. Then it was just a matter of sorting through all the cases (which was pretty easy considering we shot mostly 9mm., .45 ACP, .223, and 7.62x39.

A 20X20 piece of an old sail and a couple wood stakes tall enough to stop most brass from escaping. Does not stop many of the Mini 14 rounds. I am convinced that they end up in low earth orbit.:p

Well out here in the desert, absent of any rain, we don't have any grass, but a lot of mesquite brush, which is really easy to clear out prior to shooting. So then you've got a whole lot of light brown dirt to retrieve your empties, provided you've cleaned them up prior to shooting them. Don't ever think I clean my brass casings to make 'em look pretty, it is because they shine. You can't believe the number of older abandoned casings, I find while retrieving my nice and shiny brass.

I use a mesh tarp from Menards and have never had my brass melt to it. AR's, Garands, etc. the hot brass hitting it has not been an issue. Also being mesh it doesn't move around in the wind much, if any.
