there are SO MANY cartridges that will perform very well on deer sized game. Here's a short list of the more well know/readily available ones.

22-250
220 swift
243
250 Savage
257 Roberts
25-06
257 Weatherby
6.5x55 Swede
270
7mm-08
7mm Mauser
8mm Mauser
30-30
300 Savage
7.5 Swiss
308
30-06
300 H&H
300 win mag
303 Brit
358 Win
35 Whelen

And that list doesn't even scratch the surface of what's available, but any of the above will do their job if you do yours.

Any gun 243 or bigger that you have shot enough to have a high degree of confidence in placing a bullet in the kill zone.

I would suggest one of 4 guns (I guess it gives you options, huh? lol) A Remington 742 Woodsmaster in .30-06, A Winchester 94 in .30-30,
A .243 of some sort,
Or a .25-06, all of which are very good guns and will definitely drop a deer with correct shot placement.

Any of the 308/ 30.06 based cartridges will do you well. The 260 and 7-308 should be at the top of list for deer.
More important than choosing which one of a dozen cartridges is picking the rifle and scope combo you like and can afford. BEST does not mean Highest magnification scope or most powerful round.

A 270 winchester Stevens 200 with a good Leupold 3X9X40 VARII would be much better than a 270 winchester Weatherby Vanguard with a low price Tasco. 3X9

Buy a rifle that fits you and one that you will be proud of.

For me I use a 257 weatherby, Savage 110 with a 26" barreled with a Leupold 4X12 scope for the open plains and bean fields, and a 30.06 remington 721b, 20" barrel with a Burris 2x7 scope for not so open hunting deer hunting. (this rifle is my back up rifle for all of my other rifles)
Good Luck.
