What is the best safe for around a grand? I'm looking for a deal. Right now I see Patriot has an $1199 safe that I was looking at. Really need it to hold around 20 or so long guns.

Freight saver delivery (or a good deal on in-home delivery) all the better.

Thanks!

:D

I have a 10 gun sentry safe that can be had for under a grand... very well made.. I would hate to try to break into it...

Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff. I'd still buy the ArmourVault or the Bear Gun Safe. I think they would survive an attack much better.

I'm of the opinion that any safe is better than no safe. Others will argue that if you can't buy a bank vault, don't bother. What do you want to keep out? Kids? Junkies? Burglers? A dedicated, trained safe cracker who targeted your house will get in. However, I don't advertise I have guns, so I'm likely to get robbed by some punk druggie who wants a tv or stereo. He's not going to get my 800# safe out the door, or get it open.
My advice is: Get a safe twice as big as you think you need, you'll never regret it. Get it now for the peace of mind. You can scrimp on the paint job, or the features, but get one before something bad happens.
Oh, by the way, I ended up with one twice the price I started looking for, and I don't regret it at all.
Mine is a Champion and works great.

Remember that you safe is only as secure as the rest of your house. Decent locks are a must if you don't have them already, and consider security laminate for your windows.

The ArmorVault and Bear Guns Safes do not use the standard looking device that the others do. Take a minute to look over there sites and I think you'll figure it out. Before I moved to Alaska I saw a few of these that had been attacked. You could see that pry bars had been used and the doors started to bow and torque a little. But they were unable to defeat them. Saw one that survived a tornado. It was found still intact about 200 yards from its former residence. They are good safes. I wish I could have brought another one with me.

I'm no expert, but my understanding was that most safes are not "picked," i.e. the safe is not unlocked. Commonly they are either pryed or cut open. The quality of the metal used and its thickness directly relate to that. Bear Safe's 10 gauge body shouldn't fare any better against most attacks than other easily defeated 10 gauge body safes. Bear Safe advertises a 1/4 inch safe, their A series; is this for the entire safe?? That would make it a 3 gauge (I think) safe, very difficult to penetrate.

Armor vault also advertises 1/4 inch; for the entire safe I presume. I'd be interested in hearing what some of the safe experts on this board think of these two companies. I have not before heard of them

Another vote for Sams. Winchester digital. Like $750 after tax.

I've got one for overflow.

My general idea is that when it comes to safes just ask -a1abdj and listen to what he says.

As far as other brands I have heard LOTS of good things about Liberty safes. Other than that I dont know.

I have an old Liberty that has a 1/4" door. I like it. I bought a newer smaller Liberty without really looking at them first. They have changed. I would not buy another. It is not nearly as sturdy or pry resistant as the older model. I will one day buy a better one than my original Liberty, and sell / give away / relegate to non gun duty / etc, the newer Liberty.

and when you go to choose completely ignore the fire resistant part

That Winchester Digital safe at Sams looks like a good deal..$625 seems like a deal. The problem lies w/ getting a 350lb safe up my stairs w/out destroying the walls, floor, and my back.

Sams Club online.

trying to compare with your amsec.

Good posts in such a short period of time!

I subscribe to the premise that everyone that owns guns/has valuables needs decent safe. If it is 400lbs add a few boxes of lead sinkers/bullets to get it up another 100lbs. Also agree with the locks and windows. No substitute for good Schlage locks for the front, back, and garage doors.

I need to get real safe and I need to do it in the next couple weeks.

Any other deals out there before I pull the trigger?

:)

I called a safe company in Houston today. The sales guy said they have some top of the line models on hand but have 60 backorders already in line. They didn't have the size and model I wanted so I ordered a smaller safe out of S. Carolina. Seems there are a lot of folks buying safes these days. Imagine that.

My wife bought my safe for my x-mas present. Remember that it needs to be bolted to the floor.
