Remington 870 Wingmaster/Police models,the newer guns from Big Green do not exhibit the same reputation as the older 870s,look for and older 870.
Mossberg 500 series(590/A1) are good simple no frills pump shotties.
A good quality SXS with 18-20" barrels are hard to beat.
H&R/H&R1871/NEF single shots can be had on the used gun market for under a a C-note,I purchased three for $75 each in excellent condition.Cut the barrel down to 18.5-20" and add a decent butt cuff or screw a side saddle to the stock.
