Best powder for beginner reloading .38sp?

Well, I have an update people. I shot my first reloads last week and I still have every one of my fingers.

I should have some Missouri bullets on my doorstep in the next day or two, but I couldn't wait, so I got a box of 125gr XTPs from Gander. Which worked out well, because I could get my feet wet with the comfort of knowing that I was using data for that exact bullet.

I ended up using Universal as my powder. That stuff worked great. I loaded as light as possible, and no unburnt powder. I was surprised that it shot that clean with such light loads. Unfortunately, the Auto-disk doesn't have hole that works for the charge I was using, but it did meter very consistently (just not the amount I wanted). I have the Adjustable Charge Bar on the way too, so hopefully that will help prevent me from having to weigh every charge on the Lee scale (I love the thing, but geez... it takes a little minute to stabilize).

My wife grabbed me a jug of HP-38. So I might mess around with it later. I was looking for it originally, but Universal worked so well, I'll probably stick with it while I shoot through those XTPs.

I feel sort of guilty for shooting XTPs. They're sooo pricey. Either way, it was worth it to use them. I was worried about using anything but the exact listed components from the data.

Anyhow, I loaded the 125gr XTPs over 4.7gr of Universal. These were hands down the lightest loads for .38 that I have ever shot. They will be great for my wife. She likes shooting my SP101 with stout stuff occasionally, but she will definitely love being able to shoot 50 of these without getting shaky.

So now, it's time to load another batch of these, then it's time for some fine Missouri lead.

Congrats. The XTP is a great bullet. I mostly plink with a 125 Gr Berrys TrFP & Clays, WST, W-231, or Competition, but have some 125 Gr XTP's loaded up in some +P brass with Universal for when I need a more serious load. AA #5 works real well for that too. My 4" model 10 HB loves a AA #5 load I have for +P brass that is pretty stout.

It my not be the cleanest, but I vote for Unique or AA #5
I used Unique for a good many years it's a great powder but it didn't meter well for me. I replaced Unique with AA#5, AKA Accurate #5 this powder worked well for me in .45acp, upper end loads for .38spl, mid range loads for .357mag and even 9x18 Makarov. When the #5 is gone I will try a new powder it might be Universal or True Blue or ?

Anybody who says anything other than Unique is best for 38 for a beginner is a no good sidewinder yellow belly .........

Seriously, w/Unique you can load virtually any caliber, plus shotguns. It's also got enough volume so you can easily tell if there's a double charge (unlike, say, Bullseye).

It's a great powder. I use it for 9mm, 45 auto, 44 mag, 357 mag and 12 guage.
