Best rangefinder?

Trying to help a friend pick out a good rangefinder, but it's been a while since I did my research when I bought mine.

I bought a Leupold RX II a few years back (just for range work), and I told him one thing I'd like to have is an illuminated reticle. I like the little unit I got (of course, longer range is always better), but during the evening, it can get difficult to read the black readout in fading light.

We're using the top of the line Leupold as a baseline, but I checked one out the other day, and it looks to me like the illuminated reticle is too bright (don't know if it can be turned down or not). The crosshairs etc also looked a little thicker than I'd like, but he can live with that.

I also spotted a Vortex - was not aware they made an illuminated unit, and it looks like it also has TBR (True Ballistic Ranging) or whatever their name for it is.

Anybody have any experience, suggestions?

He also hunts, so I told him he'd probably want a nicer / longer range unit than I have since mine was for range work only.

best value is prob, PLRF05 "terrapin".

I've ranged steel targets in excess of 1000 yds with it. It was within a couple of yards when compared to the GPS data the instructors had for the targets. They aren't cheap.

Been watching videos and doing more research - that Leupold RX1000i TBR sounds nice the more I read / watch.

I see the illuminated display can be adjusted for brightness, and it has multiple reticles (the one I looked at in the showroom was too bright, and I thought the reticle a bit big / thick, but as long as it's a choice among other options?).

Some of those first suggestions were just out of his price range, were overkill, and he would like something that will fit in your pocket and can easily be operated with one hand.

I've been satisfied with my old RX II Leupold, but more range would always be nice (not that I've needed it yet), but the illuminated reticle on some of the new stuff is definitely a 'must'!

Take a look at Vortex. I've been very happy with mine. I wanted something smaller than my older Leupold.

PLRF05 terrapin is an awesome unit
