Evening all. I just got a new S&W model 10 that I’m going to be sending out to TK custom for some trigger work, chamfering of cylinders, and honing of the cylinders. I will need to get it refinished afterwards and have been leaning towards DLC. Anybody here refinish their revolver in DLC or other recommendations?

Second question does anyone know of a crane ball detect can be installed on a model 10 or if it’s even worth it?

Thank you all

I had to look up what DLC is.

Looks like a great option to finish your revolver!

Never heard of DLC before but, I predominantly own stainless steel firearms and refinishing is a much different process than blued.

Have you gotten any price quotes yet?

If you do go that route, I look forward to seeing pictures of the finished product!

Check out his CPII plating
I have used CCR Refinishing a half a dozen times
His shop is hour from my home … very professional

I have not gotten any quotes yet. Exploring my options first, I’m willing to pay more to have the finish done by a company that really knows what it’s doing and can provide a long lasting finish. Definitely will post what I decide with and pictures once it is done!

That looks like an amazing finish. I wanted to keep the black polished look which is why I’m leaning towards DLC. However, I have another pistol I wanted to get refinished and now I think I’m going to send it in to get the CPII plating. Thanks for the suggestion!

I had my 1911 tuned by nighthawk and they gave it a black nitride finish which came out amazing. Only issue is I am pretty sure they only work on 1911’s.

DLC would be a tough finish. It may be a great option.

As for adding a ball detent, @Old_Grouch posted above; it would be a lot of $$ spent for no gain at all. On the plus side, you will be getting a smoooooth revolver once the other work is done.

Let is know what it looks and shoots like once its all done.

Stay safe.

Never had a gun DLC coated but I have wrist pins for my race car DLC coated. It’s amazing stuff. Can’t scratch it off with a knife.

I am going to rust blue the old nasty model 10 I picked up recently. Never tried it, but looks like a good low cost option for someone willing to do the work.

I have some experience with ball detents in S&W revolvers and generally don't like them. In some cases, they may improve accuracy, when combined with other improvements - but then, it's tough to know whether it's the other improvements which are responsible, or the ball detent!

When used by themselves, I have sometimes seen slight improvements in accuracy, sometimes slight declines, and (usually) no difference at all.

One possible benefit is that having one allows you to remove the locking pin from the shroud, which engages the front of the ejector rod. By itself, that's not important, but it does mean that if your ejector rod gets bent, the gun will still run just fine.

The big downside, for me, is that a ball detent will often require a bit more effort while opening the cylinder. This isn't a huge problem in general, but when trying to really run the gun fast, that extra little "pop" can really foul up the flow.

Send it back to S&W and have them re-blue it. It will come back like new.
I had no idea that was an option. I clicked on this thread because I have a model 10-10 police surplus that has lost most of its bluing from years of holster wear. I was thinking about it just this weekend.

Any idea what they charge?

It was probably 8 years ago when I did mine and if I recall correctly it was ~$250. They did a fantastic job on my police trade in. It came back LNIB.

OK I can’t let this go but….

WHY would you DLC a Smith!?!?!?! just let it age gracefully

OK… I’m done, it’s your gun, do as you please

There are funny attitudes to refinishing a gun. In England, it would be routine to have your London Best Game Gun "reblacked" if it got to looking tatty; same as you would have your shooting brake resprayed.

No. It might be more difficult to see but it's still there. The secret to a excellent finish is the condition of what it is applied to, either steel or wood. The smoother the surface to be finished the smoother the finish will be.

Here's parkerized look.....

No kidding. Police trade in have honest wear. Like a 94 from Arkansas with car bracket wear. Or a good but worn Garand. Old Smith or Ruger revolvers. Makes me wonder where has this been. What has this done. But it's not like it's Custers revolver. I'm picking up what your putting down

I’ve got a few old guns that could use a refinish. But. Why? (And, mind you, I’ve had a few refinished).

From a practical standpoint, it’s a money losing proposition. You will have $500-700 in a $350 dollar, refinished gun.

If you want a more durable finish, trade it in a a S&W model 64 or 65. Back in the old days, Metaloy did good business hard chroming blued model 19 duty guns. Only because the stainless model 66’s were impossible to find. And, cops wanted the advantages of stainless.

If you just want a prettier gun, trade up to a nicer blued a model 10.

If it’s sentimental, I can kinda see it being worth it.

And, finally, if you just like it and want it refinished, go for it. And, enjoy the final result.

Refinishing erases the guns history. The one below spent its life guarding LTV. All those dings and whacks were from a guy carrying it around. He and the gun, doing their job.

I rather like the natural Patina.

This still has, what’s left, of its original finish from 1936.

It would likely refinish beautifully. And, would likely increase the value of this particular gun. I can’t make myself do it.
