I'm looking to buy a nice rifle before Obama gets into the White House.

I'm looking for:

1) High-capacity
2) Semi-automatic
3) Good for killing animals, including deer from a decent range

I'm not sure what the best caliber for this would be or the best gun even. I was thinking maybe an AR15. But would an AR15 be powerful enough to take down a good size buck?

So what weapon would you rely on when SHTR and you need it for hunting for food and protecting yourself.

Thank you.

What's the "R?"

What kind of budget are you on? A lot of people will probably say AK but in my opinion if you can afford it and the ammo, I'd go with a FAL or HK91 with 30-round mags. Those two rifles have the reliability of the AK, but are a hell of a lot more accurate and powerful. However, the ammo as I'm sure you know does cost a good bit more.

If you're planning on stockpiling a good deal of ammo, and you can afford it, I would say go with a .308 battle rifle. On a tighter budget, an AK can't be beat.

With the right caliber. but, most good calibers for the 15 are wildcat, so no factory ammo. Go with a AR-10. .243 or .308 (i can't believe i just recomended a .308 over a AR-15:eek:) Cheaper ammo that way, with a nice, long killing range. Look at DPMS's lineup. I think they use AR stocks and grips too. Not sure.

I second the M1A in .308, as ammo's probably gonna be taxed out of existance the .308 can be more useful per round when you get several bogies stacked up in-line with each other versus that lack of ability in .223.

armoredman Clever!
H2OMAN, color me jealous - nice M14!

Thanks armoredman!

1) High-capacity 20 and 25 round mags
2) Semi-automatic Excellent 2-stage military trigger with clean 4.5 lb break
3) Good for killing animals, including deer from a decent range You betcha

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I was looking for something under $1000 that I could stock-up on ammo for.

There seems not to be recommendation towards one gun.

So how would you rate these as a durable gun for hunting and protection...

AR15 in .223
Saiga in .223
Saiga in .308

It would be hard to find an AR in 6.8SPC...

Any other recommendations...i appreciate them all!

Saiga in 7.62x39 or .308 would be inexpensive options. Don't know if you consider 10 rounds of full power .308 high cap though.

my experience with saiga has been good also, i own a .223, i am please with it. my friend has a 7.62x39 and it is a good gun. if you have a low budget, get a saiga and then spend the rest on a larger cap... they make 10, 30, and sometimes 50 rd caps
