The cheapest source I've found is:

Eldon King -- Email: [email protected]

He carries all the Choate items, including all the Choate magazine extensions, in both blue and parkerized, from 7 to 10 shot.

Thanks, I sent him an e-mail.

I just found that Kieslers has the TacStar 10 shot extension for $37.95. I've used their 7 shot extension and it works great.

:Race-Pump"

Larry gonna make a mule into a racehorse...goody , goody gumdrops...:D

If the darn mini's would work...whoa Nellie! [ that fella ever gonna need to reload that thing?]

I'm actually really looking forward to the finished project. I respect Larry's skill and efforts. He knows my ribbing is just that, ribbing. Hey, I'm the idiot that has used a stock SX1 with 28" bbl, one can do well, have fun, and make some people re-think the bling bling. Everybody knows a stock gun with long bbl used for clay competions and hunting won't run/work for shotgun games...especially in blowing sand- right? -- wrong! Mine didn't miss a beat, my lack of knowing what of I was doing hurt, I was having fun tho'. Third place not bad -huh?

Hey Larry, I experimented with making my own mini's back before ...long time ago. I'll see if my notes etched in stone are around, I did a load in #6 shot and IIRC the *ahem* slugs still needed ...err...tweaking. :p I was getting close, that second single shot shotgun I fired didn't bulge like the first one did with the slugs. Just offering assistance is all.

----note:
I'm not a fan/proponent of mini's in anything but old short chambered guns for occassional use for senitmental reasons. My testing with the ones factory made did not impress me. IMO YMMV

:D

The reason I prefer the Choate, is it comes as a complete kit.

Included in the kit is the extension, the spring, the front clamp, and a better grade of magazine follower.

Most other units require that you buy the clamp as a separate accessory.

As far as I can tell the Tac Star 10 rounder comes with the clamp as well.

sm, I think I'll pass on your super duper mini shells. :) For some reason I don't want any extra bulges in this barrel!

Oughta be interesting to say the least. Massive firepower in the hands of one proficient, massive shotgunner.

This will be as nose heavy as a cinder block on a pitchfork, but if you can hold the thing up, those first couple shots shouldn't take long to re-acquire the sight pic.

You may want to stuff the stock cavity with lead for a counterbalance. Have fun...

Correia,

My gunsmith buddy agrees with dfarris --Choate.

As far as "my" minis are concerned...I don't blame you:p I don't and won't that should say something. I just spent a lot of time with pattern boards and when a fella had a short chamber and I was doing some "load testing" anyway... Well like I said not many were seen of on this side of the pond at the time.

You will not see my name as a brand brand name on boxed ammo on-line, in stores...etc. I just wanted options for the short chambers and reloaders.

I learned a lot. I still contend a slug for a 28 ga is needed, my efforts were not successful, but I still want a slug for the 28 ga. Sigh...someday perhaps.

I still contend an 870 in 28 ga. with slugs would make a very useful "tool".

A Forster style slug in 28 gauge, all else equal, will be slightly better in accuracy and penetration than a 28 gauge round ball, just as it is in 12 gauge.

Old time Mountain Men used 54 caliber rifles, roughly 28 gauge, to kill buffalo, griz and the occasional Injun. If it worked then, it'll work now...

:D
OK I'm not totally crazy. I thought along the same lines. OK Winchester get your stuff together...28 ga slugs have a place Do it...now please. What a handy easy to manage package that would be...I have always wanted this available. Please!

[ Makes more sense than a lot of stuff on the market now-a days for sure]

Bring back the 1300 in 28 ga, send me 28ga slug ammo and the gun...and I will test the heck out the two . :D :D

HD gun, shotgun only for deer in some areas, ladies, kids...possibilites here folks I'm telling ya.

Dave, I don't know why I'm trying to acomplish something like this, but like climbing a mountain, some do it just because it is there. :)

The best shooters with autos run split times around .2. The best will do less. (and that is with hitting stuff) A good pumpgunner will do .3-.4. I've gotten down into the .2-.3 range with a pump. I can do 4 aimed shots in a second on a good day. (need more practice to make sure the good days come more often though).

So what you see is that if you are running a course with lots of chances to move around and the targets are spread out, the pumpgunner can hang in there. But when you start running into arrays of bunch of targets bunched together the pumpgunner starts to lose fractions of a second every time. (the other time we start to give up time to the auto shooters is when we need to shoot from contorted positions, prone, squished up on weird barricades, in tunnels, that kind of thing).

I just want to get an 870 as slick as possible. Lots of weight up front, (where did I leave that weight bench?) and a high ammo capacity. When you are trying to shoot 30 rounds in 40 seconds every extra shell helps! I figure the extra weight will keep the muzzle down a bit more, but I'm giving up lightness on the swing. However I figure the extra rounds will offset that as going head to head against a guy with a 9 or 10 shot Benelli and me with my 7 shot 870 means I get to spend an extra second or two loading.

Aww heck, a 30 inch 870 on me looks like an 18 inch gun on most people anyway. :D I might as well try to milk the size advantage.

I'm also going to put a 3 gun gear side saddle on it, as well as my standard nylon butt cuff. I'm giving some serious thought to adding some sort of flip up rear sight leaf on the rib to facilitate 100 yard slug shots. I've seen some comp guns from way back when set up that way. I could go ghost ring sights for the precision on slug shots, but personally I think nothing beats a good old fashioned bead for what the shotgun is best at. Close and super fast, plus every now and then they like to throw some clay birds at you. :)

Sound reasons for your choices. You've thought this out well,IMO.

Sure you can handle it? After all you only stand about 5 feet, 21 inches.

The little Lyman flip sight oughta work for what you cite, but I'd be tempted to just keep it simple with a bead. Try some 100 yard slug shooting and see how much you "Need" a rear sight.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for a WM....

Dave, I plan on wringing it out thurougly on 100 yard slug shots before I make any change. The barrel I have set aside is ribbed with a double bead. I have not used this type of barrel for slugs before, so I need to do a bunch of shooting before I decide to change anything.

Correia,

By double bead do you mean standard brass front bead and a tad smaller mid bead? This set up I use, like ,and have been happy with. I don't do a lot of slugs at 100 yds, I'm comfortable 50..65 yds. I like the idea of the Lyman sight, just wondering if a larger than standard front bead ( twice the size) and therefore using standard bead for mid bead ...getting this set up to "dial in" for 100 yds , would be quicker to aquire target? I'm thinking out loud here.

Recall some vent ribs are tapered ( wide at rear, narrow at front for the new folks reading) dunno thoughts are these "focus quicker", I know, I get into trouble when I think. I really like what I "think" you are doing.

Yep, larger bead on the end, smaller bead at mid point. I haven't used this setup for slugs so I'm going to have to see how it works. I just say 100 yards as an arbitrary number because that is the farthest I have ever had to hit a slug target in a match. The usual is probably 40-60.

With my regular 870, 18 inch, no rib, single bead, you have to aim below the bottom of an IDPA target to hit it in the down 0 zone at 100 yards. :D It is an interesting sight picture to say the least.

Larry-

A lot of folks are surprised that one can hit with a bead at 100 yards. Not as easy as rifle sights, but a lot easier than some make it out to be.

FWIW, the one problem you may have, especially with a shiny bead at longer distances, is the light reflecting off it and causing an optical illusion of where you need to aim (i.e. the sun's at 11 o'clock high, highlighting the left side the bead and placing the right side in a light shadow so your POI may be at 1 o'clock). Of course the same thing can happen in reverse with light coming into a rear aperture. But you already knew that so I'll go get another cup of coffe and be quiet.:)

Denny

Denny, valid point. I recall reading that in SWAT as a matter of fact! :D

Seriously I haven't noticed that effect yet, but I'll be on the look out for it. If I can get it to happen in practice, I'll be better prepared for those light conditions under more serious use. I have a white bead in front, not a gold bead, I don't know if that makes much difference or not.

Happy New Years! I just bought the base gun for this project at lunch. Police trade in Remington Express Magnum. $180. I'm not usually a fan of the Express line, but this one seemed to have a smooth action, and a surprisingly good trigger pull. None of that grittyness I have come to expect from recent Expresses. (unfortunatly I found out that the store had just barely sold 4 trade in Wingmasters that were virtually unused from a local security company $220!)

The gun has wear on the receiver from riding in a rack, but as far as I can tell it hasn't been shot hardly at all. There appears to be no internal wear that I can find, and from the amount of grunge, I'm guessing if this gun has been shot, it ain't been shot much.

Now I need to get rid of the rifle sighted barrel to offset costs, and I can get down to business. :) It has the standard plastic furniture, I don't know if I'll keep the buttstock, but the fore end needs to go. It is the longer 870 type that covers a bunch of the receiver when it is pulled to the rear. I'll replace that with a shorter one. Anybody want a fore end? I'm going to try and work a trade to somebody I know for the barrel.

I get to go shooting tomorrow. Hopefully everything on it will work.

:D Happy New Year! :D
