I'd like to try varminting. My family lives in North West Iowa, so the best situation would be driving to some place in South Dakota. I found some places that look good but they are a good 8-10 hour drive from my family. Anyone know any decent places that are in the southeastern quarter of the state?

My plan is mostly to shoot prairie dogs but if Coyote was an option, I'd try that as well.

Prairie dogs are not common east of the Missouri River. You'll have to travel at least midway through SD to get to huntable numbers of dogs.

Just look on line and make some calls to the outfitters in western SD, not eastern SD. Some offer prairie dogs in combination with other hunts, which is not what you're after. Look for outfitters who specialize in varmints. If you can do p-dogs and coyotes, that would be loads of fun. A few phone calls will be of immeasurable value.

Keep in mind that hunting tribal ground REQUIRES a tribal guide and a tribal(*cough cough EXPENSIVE*) license, which can add to the expense considerably. I can't imagine much more boring than a "guided" prairie dog hunt. "Hey, there's one there.....shoot it. And another over there....maybe you shoot it, too...and another over there....and one over here, and one to left, and one to its right...." . I'd be more inclined to seek out privately owned land in the same area, which would only require a state-issued license and permission from the landowner.

The value of a good guide, especially in this instance, is you may or may not be guided to the best spots to shoot, depending on a number of factors. Of course, you should proceed thoughtfully, but I wouldn't turn thumbs down on guided shoots.
